food.

English food.
England, English people and the food they like to eat
Page 1 . English tea.
P
2
: Great Britain is situated on islands. It is washed by seas from all sides. That's
why the climate and the nature of Great Britain is very specific. The weather is
mild and foggy. It rains very often in all seasons. Due to the rainy and foggy
weather the English are great lea-drinkers. They have it many times a day. Some
Englishmen have tea for breakfast, tea in lunch time, tea after dinner, tea at tea-
time and tea with supper.
Some English families have "high tea" or big tea and no supper. I or high tea they
may have cold meat, bread and butter, cakes, and of course, a lot of tea.
The Englishmen always drink tea out of cups, never out of glasses. They usually
drink tea with milk.
Page 2 . Tea-drinking.
P.i: Nowadays, tea drinking is no longer a proper, formal, "social'' occasion. The
English don't dress up to "go out to tea" anymore. But one tea ceremony is still
very important in Britain - the Tea Break! Millions of people in factories and
offices look forward to their tea breaks in the morning and afternoon.
Page 3 . How tea was first drink in Britain.
P
4
: By the time tea was first introduced into this country (1660), cot-fee had
already been drunk for several years. By 1750 tea had become the most popular
beverage for all types and classes of people -even though a pound of tea cost a
skilled worker a third of his
weekly wage.
page 4. Tea ware.
P
5
: Early tea cups had no handles, because they were originally imported from
China. Chinese cups didn't (and still don't) have handles.
Chinese tea cups
As tea drinking grew in popularity, it led to a demand for more and more tea ware.
And this resulted in the rapid growth of the English pottery and porcelain industry.
The English always drink tea out of cups or mugs, never out of glasses.
Page 5 . English breakfast.
P
6
: Due to the fact that England is a cold country, English people usually eat meat
at breakfast time. An Englishman's idea of a good breakfast is the following: cereal
with milk, bacon and eggs or fish, hot buttered toast with jam or marmalade and a
cup of coffee or strong tea with milk.
Page 6. Making a Perfect cup of tea.

another one on
the west. People live within 4 time zones. It's a land of physical contrasts. The land
varies from heavy forests to large deserts. The southern parts of the country have
warm temperatures year round, [] is very hot in this part of America, and American
people like drinking iced tea.
Page 8 . Iced tea.
PI
()
: Iced tea is very popular in America, where many families keep a jug in their
fridge through the long hot summer. The best way to make this is to make a pot of
tea and after the lea has been infused for 5 minutes pour the tea off into a jug and
put in the fridge to cool. Serve it with ice cubes, lemon or orange to flavoure and
sugar if you wish.
It is an excellent economical and refreshing summer drink!
Page 9. Chicken salad.

country to another from one city to another. They arc fond of hot dogs, different
salads. And now the recipe of chicken salad.
Apple chicken salad:
- 1 medium apple, cored and chopped;
- 1 cup diced cooked chicken;

The Russian federation, Russian people and the food they like to eat
Page 10. Location and climate. Russian tea.
PI;: The size of Russia is hard to imagine. Russia is washed in '^ North by the
Arctic Ocean and its seas. A flight to Magadan takes 8 hours. That's why Russians
think and act big. Nature has not. been kind
to Russia. Much of European Russia
and Siberia is very cold most of the year.
Due to this harsh climate Russians are also great tea-drinkers! Tea with lemon is
called "Russian tea".
Lemon tea is popular all the year round. You should use a heal proof nobler and
serve the lea simply with a slice of lemon. Sugar can be added to taste.
Page 11. Borshch.
Pi,: Borshch is the most favourite meal of Russians. It is a regular meal with
Russians, you may try to cook it for the members of your family, if you want to
please them.
Borshch (the recipe)
Boil some meat for about 1-1,5 hours in the salted water. Stew sliced beetroot in
the pan with the fat from the broth. Try sliced carrots, onions and parsley in the
frying-pan (separately from the beetroot), use vegetable oil for this. Beetroot
should be slewed, carrots and onions -fried, peel, slice and fry tomatoes for 10
minutes separately. Put some cabbage and potatoes in the broth. (The lid of the
sauce-pan must be open.) Add stewed beetroot, fried carrots, onion, parsley,
tomatoes, sweet pepper (if you want) and in 15 minutes your borshch is ready. It is

time, what dishes
would you recommend?
4) Do you know any dishes that are typically British?
5) What food and drink is good for Russians? etc.
2. English magazine "My sweet home".
PI: And now we are going to discuss the following topic: the influence of
geography on people in their houses.
England and English houses
Page 1. English climate.
P
2
: The climate of the British Isles is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Winters are
not so cold as they can be on the continent. Great Britain has a mild climate.
England is famous for its beautiful lawns with flowers. They stay green all the year
round. Many people say that England looks like a large well-kept park. That's why
Englishmen like to live in small cottages with a small garden. They are very fond
of hedges. They prefer hedges to ordinary fences.
Page 2. There is no place like home.
P
3
: People often say that the Englishman's home is his castle. The) mean that the
home is very important and personal. Most people in Britain live in houses rather
than flats.
The English are stay-at-home people. When they don't work the) like to spend their
days off at home with their families. Englishmen are very fond of chimneys, that's
why many of them prefer the open fire<° central heating.
Rich Englishmen live in mansions. Mansions can be found in t'
1L
' country side, in
towns, in the suburbs of cities. They are probably '^ most expensive houses. They
are very big and have large gardens.
The United States of America
page 3. Location. Population.
p
4
: The United States of America is located in North America. It is one of the
largest countries in the world. The population of the USA is bout 250 million
people. The USA has 50 states. Its capital is Washington DC. It is a highly
developed country. People of very many nationalities live in the USA.
Some of the biggest cities are New York, Chicago, San Francisco and others.
Page 4. Skyscrapers and caravans, teepees.
P
5
: There are many very tall buildings in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago. These
buildings really scrape the sky, that's why they are called skyscrapers. We can see
skyscrapers in large cities. They are rather expensive because they are usually
high-class, luxurious buildings.
Americans are always on the move - from one part of the country to another, from
one city to another, from farm to city. And that's why they are fond of living in
caravans. Living there has some advantages and disadvantages.
American-Indians like living in the teepees. Of course, it is romantic and unusual!
But the teepee is very small for a big family and you can't have a room of your
own. Besides, there are no modern conveniences in the teepee (central heating,
running water).
The Russian Federation
Page 5. Blocks of flats, mansions.
P
6
: Our country is very large in size. Imagine yourself in a plane flying over its
territory. You will see wonderful sights: blue lines of the rivers, blue mirrors of the
lakes and seas, green meadows, plains and forests.
Russian nature, spirit and genius come together in the greatest people of our land.
And great people built wonderful tall buildings. For exemple, Moscow University
on Lenin Hills. There are many other high "locks of flats in Moscow and other
cities. These houses are very comfortable and have all modern conveniences. Rich
Russian people live in luxurious buildings - mansions. They are very big and have
large gardens.
P a g e 6. Russian houseboats,
P
7
: Russia is a land of long rivers and large lakes. The largest of all| is the Volga.
Many people live and work near the Volga. They live in
the houseboats on the
Volga. I wouldn't like to live in a houseboat! (\ the one hand it is romantic! But on
the other hand there is no running water and central heating here. That's why it is
not convenient.
Page 7. Russian light houses.
PS: Russia is washed by a number of seas. And you can many original light houses
there. A lot of people live and work in these light houses. The light houses are for
from noisy cities, and the life is quid here. You can dream about the sea and
adventures!
Teacher. Thank you dear pupils for your wonderful magazines' And now answer
(he following questions.
1) What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in a light house, in caravan
or a teepee?
2) Would you like to live in one of these houses? Why?
3) What makes a good house?
4) Is the influence of geography on people and their lifestyles great or not? etc.

Teacher. Dear pupils! Thank you for your excellent work! You can describe the
geographical position of a country and the influence of the geographical position of
a country on people's lives.
