The Subject: Shops and shopping
The Objectives: to develop the skills of dialogical speech on the topic through reading and listening;
to reinforce the vocabulary on the topic;
to enrich the pupils' vocabulary;
to teach the pupils to do shopping wisely and choose gifts correctly.
The Procedure
I. Greetings: Good morning, children! I’m glad to see you again.
1.Warming up:
How are you doing?
Why? What's the matter?
Maybe it's because of the weather?
2. Complimenting:
You are fantastic in your new suit! Thank you!
Where did you buy it? At “Global”
Orange suits you very much! Thanks, you are very kind!
Your new blouse looks really nice on you! Is it new? Yes. Thanks a lot!
Children, you look great today! So do you!
Thank you very much!
II. Lexical drill:
1. Guessing game: Yesterday I went shopping and bought one thing. It is in this packet. Guess what it is
asking me yes/no questions.
P1: Is it any food?
P2: Is it for a house?
P3: Is it for women?
P4: Is it for a body or for your head?, etc
T: Yes! Well done! This is a present for my friend who is having a birthday on the 17 of December.
2. Winter holidays: You know, winter is the season of holidays. What holidays do we celebrate in winter
and when?
Christmas is celebrated on the 25
th
of December and 7
th
of January.
3. Introducing the subject: So, our theme today is shopping and gifts.
III. Main part:
1. Vocabulary: What shops do you know?
Vocabulary exercises on individual cards:
1) Match the shops and goods, make up sentences:
fishmonger’s medicine, make-up
confectioner’s meat, sausages
butcher’s a ring, a watch, a necklace
chemist’s an antique furniture, a raincoat
jeweller’s fish, crabs
charity shop a bar of chocolate, a cake
e.g. I can buy pens and pencils at the stationer’s
2) Guess the word by its definition:
Paper money or coins cash (words appear on the screen)
Very cheap next to nothing
Various - miscellaneous
Buy without cash on credit/by cheque
A person who sells a shop assistant
A big store with many departments a supermarket
3) Give the opposite:
I can’t stand my tight jacket.
This department always sells old-fashioned items.
My aunt prefers formal style.
Young people sometimes wear dull clothes.
I hate short skirts.
This dress is too plain for you.
e.g. I can’t stand my tight jacket. I can’t stand my loose jacket.
2. Enriching vocabulary: I have found a nice English proverb. Let us guess it. Which word in the following
groups is different?
Skirt, cap, never, jacket
Silk, buy, wool, cotton
Sale, bargain, a pig, cash
Short, tight, a poke, long
Never buy a pig in a poke. (On the screen)
- Do you know the Ukrainian or Russian equivalent of this proverb?
- Explain how you understand it. I think it will be a very good motto of our lesson.
3. Homework: reporting ideas. Why do we go shopping? Presenting short speeches, pictures in groups.
4. Reading:
1) Read the title. What do you expect to read?
2) Read the text (Ex 2 p 40 WB) and say which paragraph
encourages you to ask what people want? D
gives advice about buying gifts for people you know well? B

helps you with buying gifts for people you haven’t seen for a long time? C
3) Read the text and choose if the statements are true or false.

5) What is the best present for you, your friend, your parents? Remember, buying presents take into
consideration the person’s interests.
5. Listening and watching video:
Your tasks While listening fill in the gaps in the text.
Shopping without money is called (window shopping). It is a nice way to entertain as you can do it with
your (friends). The most unpleasant thing about shopping is (crowded stores). On weekends you (can’t) get
through the crowd to see the new stuff. I enjoy shopping for (books) because reading is fun.
Read the text with the correct words.
6. Speaking:
1)Survey. Two “psychologists” ask questions around the class divided into two groups and report their
results.
1. Do you enjoy shopping?
2. How often do you go shopping?
3. Do you go window shopping?
4. Who do you often go shopping with?
5. What store do you like best and what store do you like least?
6. Do you sometimes buy second-hand things?
7. Do you sometimes buy things that you don't need?
8. Do your parents give you pocket money?
9. What do you use it for?
10. Can you spend your money wisely?
What conclusion can we make?
2) Dialogues.
1) Read these phrases. Who may have said them? (on the screen)

2) Complete the conversation with these phrases. There are three extra phrases you do not need to
use. (WB p 41)
3) What phrases are extra? (B E G) What is the correct order of them in the dialogue? (A H C I D J F)
4) In pairs act out similar dialogues using pages from catalogues.
