you tell to Petrozavodsk?
Petrozavodsk
is…”
- Ok, I see you like your native city. Petrozavodsk is really beautiful, historical, modern,… But
how old is Petrozavodsk? (…)

But do you know that this year the British people have celebrated an important date as well?
What sign is it? Do you know what it is? (…)
- Well, it’s a logo for the Underground System of London. And this year it has celebrated its
150
th
birthday! London Underground (or Tube) is the first railway underground system in the
world. It was opened on 10
th
of January in 1863.
But why do I mention London Underground speaking about our city? Have you got any ideas?
(…)
- Have a look at this video story and think what problem I’d like to discuss with you today.
- Have you ever seen such situations? What means of transport can we see in the streets of
Petrozavodsk? What transport do you use to get to your school every day? How much time does
it take you to get to school? Is it comfortable? (…)
- Can you combine all you’ve said and think over the topic for today’s lesson? (…)
- You are right! We’ll discuss if we can build an Underground system in Petrozavodsk.
Underground in Petrozavodsk: pros and cons”)
- It’s not an easy question. What should we know (what information, what facts) to decide if it’s
possible to build metropolitan in Petrozavodsk?
(…)
(1) advantages and disadvantages of underground as a mean of transport;
2) how the underground system is built and what the problems with its construction are;
3) price;
4) peoples opinion.)

3.2. Now I would ask you to divide into 2 groups. Those of you who have green and blue
sheets of paper will be the first group and you’ll find advantages of Underground as a means of
transport. Those of you who have pink and yellow sheets will search for disadvantages of it. If
your group is ready, raise your hand.
there are no traffic jams in the underground, it’s a rather cheap means of transport, it doesn’t
work at night, there can be crowds (толпы) of people during “rush hour”, it’s one of the safest
means of transport, it’s uncomfortable to travel with luggage, people can get under the train,
construction of underground costs much, ...
- Can your groups add some positive or negative effects of this means of transport? (…)
- Now I want you to make 4 expert groups. Every group will have individual tasks. Youll have 5
minutes to work with information.
1) Builders
2) Statisticians/ Economists
3) Transport Critics
4) Sociologists)
Builders (Group 1)
Vocabulary Support:
“open way” – «открытый способ»
1) Read the information:
There are 2 types of the underground lines: deep and superficial. Deep lines are at about
20 meters under the ground. They are made by special machines. Superficial lines are at about 5
meters under the ground and are made with an “open way”.
2) Watch a short film about ways of building underground system.
3) Think and give your expert conclusion what type of construction is better for
Petrozavodsk.
“Underground can be built with __________ and ___________ ways. We think __________
way is better for Petrozavodsk, because…”
Use the phrases:
make impossible street traffic,
spoil architectural monuments,
make people’s lives difficult,
noisy,
more expensive (cheaper),
Statisticians (Group 2)
Vocabulary Support:
to link связать, соединить
suburbs [s b bz] окраины
map карта
billion миллиард
1) Read the information:
London is considered to be a city with the best transportation system. London
Underground (or the Tube) is the oldest underground railway system in the world. It started its
work in 1863. The company that made it was called “Metropolitan Railways”. Now we call all
the underground transportation systems Metropolitan. The system in London consists of 11 lines
that link London suburbs with its central zone.
London Underground is the longest underground system in the world, it is 400 km long
and it has 270 stations. This system takes about 3 million people every day and about 1 billion
people every year. The map of the London Tube became an example for the same maps in many
countries.
2) Find in the Internet the information about total area and population in 2 cities:
London
Petrozavodsk
Total area
Population
3) Think and give your expert conclusion:
“The population of Petrozavodsk is _____________ than the population of London.
Total area of our city is _________________ that the area of the British capital.
We know the fact, that 1 km of underground railway system costs (in Moscow) form 5 to 10
billion rubles. So, we think it’s (not) a good idea, (im)possible, (not) reasonable) to build
Metropolitan in Petrozavodsk.”
Transport Critics (Group 3)
Vocabulary Support:
suitable [sju:t bl] подходящий
the disabled [dis eibld] инвалиды
technical break [teknik l breik] технический перерыв
paths [pa:Os] дорожки
crowd [kraud] толпа
allow [ lau] позволять, пускать
stuffy [st fi] душно
scare [ske ] пугать
1) Read the text:
Nowadays underground system in London grows wider and wider, new lines and stations
appear, new trains and carriages start working. The Tube doesn’t work all day long; there is a
short technical break at night.
There are some disadvantages of underground. It is not suitable for the disabled people.
Modern stations are constructed with escalators and special paths for the disabled. But
reconstruction of old stations is rather expensive. As well, there is a problem with great crowds
of people in the Tube during rush hours. Sometimes during such periods of the day people are
not allowed to come into the Tube.
Accidents are very rare (not often) in the underground, it’s the safest means of transport.
But sometimes it can get very stuffy and hot there, because ventilation system works not very
well. One more disadvantage and failure of the Tube is a great number of mice and rats. They
sometimes scare passengers.
London Underground stations are rather beautiful; many of them are decorated with
frescoes and mosaics.
2) Answer the questions:
-) What transport in Petrozavodsk is suitable for the disabled?
-) Are there crowds of people in buses and trolleybuses during rush hours in Petrozavodsk?
-) Are there accidents with cars, buses, trolleybuses in Petrozavodsk streets?
3) Think and give an expert conclusion:
“Underground is a ____________ (good/ not good/ problem/ …) means of transport.
It’s more/ less comfortable (than cars/ buses/ …), because ….
It’s more/ less dangerous (than cars/ buses/ …), because ….
It’s more/ less …”
Sociologists (Group 4)
1) You are sociologists. Your task is to study position of people who live in Petrozavodsk.
Ask people in the classroom if they are for or against the construction of Underground in
Petrozavodsk.
“Is it a good idea to build an underground railway in Petrozavodsk? Why?”
2) Give your expert conclusion:
“We have asked city-dwellers, native livers and guests of Petrozavodsk. We have learnt that the
most of them are for/ against the construction of underground system in our capital. The reasons
are the following: ….
So, we think it’s (not) a good idea to build metropolitan in Petrozavodsk.”
Vocabulary Support:
make impossible street traffic
make people’s lives difficult
more expensive (cheaper) дороже (дешевле),
- Now I would like you to get into 2 groups. Every sheet of paper of different colours has a
number (№1 or №2). I would ask those pupils who have number 1 gather to the right of me, and
numbers 2 will organize a group to the left of me. You’ll have 3 minutes to give your expert
conclusion. Are you “for” or “against” metropolitan in Petrozavodsk?
- Thank you very much for your work, dear experts! Could you explain your point of view?
- OK, your reasons are convincing, you have done a great work! Thank you very much! I see the
future of Petrozavodsk is in good hands.
- Let’s come back to the title of our lesson. (…) I think everybody understands the answer.
Underground is a very good and comfortable means of transport, but for Petrozavodsk it’s a
matter of far-far future. And maybe one day you’ll remember our lesson travelling by
Petrozavodsk Underground.
- I liked your work very much, and I want all of you to finish our lesson with the words:
“Now I know that…
The lesson helps me to…
Now I can…”
т.д.)
- And as you know, to travel by an underground railway system you need special coins/ travel
tokens. I gave you such a kind of a token. If you like our lesson put your token into the box with
a positive “smile”. And if you are interested in how metropolitan was built in London, New York
and Paris you can watch an interesting film made by “National Geographic” (I will give you an
Internet address for this site). That will be your home task.
