INTRODUCTION
The problem of choosing a future profession has always been very
important. The properly chosen career makes a person happy and successful for
the rest of his life.
The aim of our project is to study the problem of choosing a profession
by the young people.
To achieve this aim we have learnt a great amount of information from the
Internet, books and magazines and held the investigation we asked our
schoolmates (students of 9-11 forms) some questions connected with the topic.
The objectives of the work are:
1. to study the literature on the topic that is available on the internet and in
the libraries and summarize the valuable information;
2. to conduct a survey on the problem and to discuss the results of our
research paper at the English lessons and school conference;
3. to describe some professions which are the most popular among the
youth;
4. to give some advice about how to choose a profession.
The object of the investigation is students of school 67 of
Ordzonikidzevskii district. The subject of the investigation is choosing
professions by the youth. The methods of the investigation are: studying
different kinds of literature (books, encyclopedias, web-sites); survey and
analysis, interview.

1. HOW NOT TO BE MISTAKEN AND BECOME SUCCESSFUL
As early as being a child a person thinks of his future profession. The
choosing of profession is often based on the passion for this or that school
subject or a fashion on a profession. It's no wonder that many adults appear
subsequently are dissatisfied with the chosen line of business. To avoid such
situation young people are to approach the problem very thoroughly, weigh the
pros and cons. Choosing a profession is serious and long work with which
psychologists and career-guidance professionals can help. Certainly, it is not
necessary to deny advice of relatives, but a person's own reasons should be in
the foreground. It’s fine when wise advice sounds in time instead of after a fatal
mistake has been made. Sometimes, a young person having a possibility to apply
the knowledge and skills in an interesting direction makes all his life unfortunate
because of the following the tastes of environment.
What factors stipulate a choice of a person of this or that trade?
In practice it appears that propensities are taken into consideration in the
last turn, but the opinion of parents has a great influence [1]. Someone hardly
begins to challenge the opinion that money has always been one of the primary
factors at a trade choice. It is possible to be unfortunate, being at the same time a
rich person, and to flit with happiness when according to people's opinion, the
situation cannot be worse. And an unloved, but monetary and prestigious trade
will not bring pleasure if the choice was made without taking into account
personal preferences. But favorite work which gives not only the possibility of
realization of the knowledge, but also satisfaction, will promote feeling of self-
satisfaction. A trade choice is really an uneasy and responsible task. In the
modern world there are a lot of professions. Each of them has the unique
features and the unique atmosphere. For mastering each of them a person is to
have some knowledge, sometimes difficult one, sometimes not, but for finding
at least initial skills it is necessary to learn at first and then start to work. Lately
5
the majority of school-leavers choose such professions as a lawyer, an
economist, a manager operating stuff and others.
Undoubtedly, the general erudition is a positive factor, but it is necessary
to understand an objective truth "everybody cannot be chiefs". After graduating
from an institute or university a person will hardly find occupational work
because the market of vacancies is overflowed by similar offers, and it’s a
problem to get a prestigious post without establishing some links in this or that
company. As a result we can see complete unemployment among young
specialists who have higher education and their own pride.
Today the most popular professions are lawyers, economists and
managers. These professions are prestigious. I know there are many interesting
and useful professions but above all I like the profession of a lawyer. My friend
has already finished a college of law. After leaving college he dreamed to enter
the university and to get higher education. He had chosen jurisprudence. He is
very proud of being a student of this university. He wants to be a lawyer or to
work with some kind of juridical work. He believes law is interesting and
attractive subject to study. Besides, it is very useful to gain knowledge about law
nowadays, because there is so much unfairness and cruelty in our society. There
is lack of people who fight against these negative phenomena. Law is the system
of rules of conduct established by the sovereign government of a society to
correct wrongs, maintain stability, and deliver justice. The profession of a
lawyer is a human one because it stands up for the interests and rights of people.
Besides, I guess, this work requires much courage and determination for lawyers
fight negative phenomena in the society. The role of lawyers is rapidly growing
in our society.
I think in our modern life we need lawyers as much as doctors. Everyday
lawyers help people. They choose the right way in difficult situations, fight for
the people rights and save their lives.
6
So, as you see, it is very important for the young people to make the right
choice of profession to be successful and not to regret about anything in the
future life.
The choice of this or that profession is promoted by some factors [1]:
1. Influence of parents (some parents adhere to the position that their son
or daughter should follow in their footsteps, others embody the non realized
dreams through the child);
2. Prestige of a profession (for this reason young people decide to become
lawyers, economists considering that these professions are highly paid, but very
often young specialists cannot find a job);
3. The choice of schoolmates ( the opinion of friends quite often has a
great influence on school-leavers and some of them choose this or that
profession only because of the schoolmates' opinion).
Such motivations are definitely the wrong reasons for starting out on a
career that should satisfy a person’s basic needs and personal expectations.
Before a school-leaver chooses a job, he must assess a number of factors: what
do you feel about your professional future? Where would you start? What kind
of work do you want to do? What kind of professional environment do you
want? What location and commute should you expect? Do you want to be a self-
employed professional?
Things should be a lot simpler for a school-leaver if he went ahead with
his job search after he identifies the answers to these questions. But the answers
are not readily available with anyone he knows. Research, talking with friends
or seniors can only yield limited information. This is where a career guidance
test can help.
School-leavers could use it as a tool for the assessment and development
of their career. First of all, a young person will learn which careers are suitable
for him and which aren't; this saves him lot of time and helps him avoid
unpleasant experience are otherwise inevitable. Then, the accuracy of the career
guidance test allows a person to better focus on set objectives, and thus prevent
7
costly professional mistakes. Plenty of such tests are completely free of charge
as they are organized by national employment agencies. A career guidance test
is highly reliable and takes only ten minutes to complete. It is a set of questions
that a person can take online, and the results are available immediately.
When a person takes a career-guidance test, he answers some questions
that are afterwards analyzed according to the pre-established response patterns.
Results will help a person to pinpoint the perfect job as related to the present day
workforce. The accuracy of a good career guidance test relies on complex
algorithms. It is a psychometric test developed to help a person to spot the best
occupation.
So, a career-guidance test is very useful because it can help a school-
leaver to make better life decisions. [2]
We asked our schoolmates about how they chose future profession. Lisa
Murtazina from 9 "B" grade gave us some advice how not to make a wrong
choice [3]:
Sooner or later all of us face the problem of choosing a career when we
are to decide what we are going to be in future .But I want to say it is not easy
or simple to decide what career to choose. As it is known the success or failure
of adult life depends upon the choice made early in life. It should be said that
I’ve discussed this problem with my parents and teachers. We also have spoken
a lot with my friends about our career prospects. Your choice should be based
on your own opinion. Choosing the future career, we should consider the
following things.
Pay. Is the size of your salary important?
Place of work. You ought to decide whether you want to work indoors
(cashier, chemist, librarian, secretary, etc.) or outdoors (driver, firefighter,
estate agent, etc.)
Full-time, part-time, flexitime job. There is no set pattern to part-time
working.
Communication with different people. Meeting and dealing with people
8
doesn’t appeal to every person.
Business trips. You should keep in mind that some professions simply
travelling all over the world, such as tour guides, scientists, actors, journalistic,
pilots and so on. It’s not always fun.
Aspirations for creative work. If you a creative person, it’s a must for you
to find such job. It can be a job of an artist, a tailor, a designer or a stylist.
Jobs connected with risk. Such jobs are usually well-paid, but very
dangerous.
Analyzing all these points will help you not to make a wrong choice.
Our schoolmates and students of the Institute of Foreign Languages, the
USPU, wrote the articles for our school magazine. They shared their opinions
about the problem of choosing a profession and told about professions they had
chosen [3].

According to the results of the questionnaire (Appendix 1), a lot of girls
have chosen their future profession. Only 12% of them can't say what they want
to do in future. They can't choose no one of the professions. About 45% of girls
find this question hard to answer.
The most popular among the girls are professions of a doctor and a
lawyer. The next one is a manager. About 39% of girls have their own opinion
11
in that question. The least popular answer is a profession of a scientist (about
3%).
About 40% of girls have learned about their future profession from TV
programs and books. Only 5% have learnt about it from the internet. I think it is
very good because, it means that books are more popular than the internet.
The most popular characteristics in future profession for girls are
underemployment and flexibility. Modern girls want to be independent and
successful. High salary, safety and extreme conditions are not very important for
them.
For the biggest part of girls, opinion of their friends is the most important.
The next are the representatives of the professions. Only for 5% of girls opinion
of their parents is significant when they choose a career.
About 40% of girls consider professions of an actor (an actress) and a
soldier the most popular ones. The next one is a doctor. As for me, profession of
a doctor is the most popular in our country nowadays. The least popular
professions for girls are an engineer, a sportsman, a worker, an astronaut and an
interpreter. Only about 5% of girls think that a scientist and a politician are the
most demanded professions in our country.
Boys and girls have very different points of view.
About 50% of boys have chosen their future profession. And only 20%
find this question hard to answer. I think it is good because the biggest part of
boys know what they want to be in future. It is important for their future
education.
About 30% of boys want to become engineers, 15% want to be soldiers.
And about 13% want to be interpreters. The other part of boys wants to become
businessmen, workers, lawyers, managers, etc. About 42% of boys have learned
about their future profession from friends. About 45% have known about it from
the internet and TV. And only about 15% have learnt about it from their parents.
The most important characteristics of the future profession for boys are
career, flexibility, safety and opportunity to travel abroad. Extreme conditions
12
and creative work are important only for about 10% of boys. Other boys want to
have underemployment and ability to communicate with people like the main
characteristics of their future professions.
For about 43% of boys the opinion of their parents is significant when
they choose a career. Opinion of the teacher is important for 25% of boys. The
others listen to their friends.
About 40% of boys think that professions of a sportsman and a
businessman are the most popular in our country. The next ones are a lawyer, a
manager and an engineer. Only about 10% of boys think that professions of an
astronaut and a soldier are very popular in our country now.

CONCLUSIONS
Choosing a profession is one of the main choices in a person's life. When
choosing the future profession a person is to think of his interests, desires,
possibilities and many others things. It is necessary to understand that all
citizens cannot take supervising and prestigious posts. It’s important to
remember the main thing: "It is better to be a yard keeper with a kopeck in a
pocket, than a governor without money, but with own pride".
The results of our investigation show that the great number of our
schoolmates think a lot about future profession and try to make the right choice.
