The Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic Ocean separates Northern
and Southern America from Europe and Africa.
It is 32 million square miles.
The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean in the world, next only to the Pacific Ocean.

Interesting & Fun Facts about the Atlantic Ocean

Of all the world's oceans, the Atlantic Ocean is the youngest.
The name “Atlantic” comes from the legendary island of “Atlantis”
The Atlantic Ocean is much saltier than the Pacific Ocean.
In winter storms of the Atlantic waves can reach a great size and do great damage to land.

The Gulf Stream

The warm Gulf

during winters

Puerto Rico Trench
is the deepest point
in the Atlantic Ocean.
It is about eight and
a half thousand
meters deep.

THE TITANIC

Titanic, the largest ship in the world - sank in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912, after being hit by an iceberg on her maiden voyage to America.

THE TIGER SHARK

The Tiger Shark, the most dangerous after the Great White Shark, lives only in the Atlantic Ocean.

THE SARGASSO SEA

In the middle of the ocean, near the West Indies, is the Sargasso Sea.

It is also known
as the "floating
desert".
The water is very calm and is filled
with seaweeds.

Greenland

The largest island in the Atlantic Ocean is Greenland.

The ARCTIC OCEAN is the smallest and coldest oceans in the world. All the year round, the ocean is covered with a sheet of sea ice.

The Arctic Ocean is located around the North Pole across the
Arctic Circle.

Some Interesting Facts about the Arctic

The Arctic Ocean is about 8 percent the size of the Pacific Ocean.
The Arctic Ocean's ice sheet is four times as large as the state of Texas.
Its area is more than fourteen thousand million sq km. The Arctic Ocean includes Baffin Bay, the Barents Sea, the Beaufort Sea, the Chukchi Sea, the East Siberian Sea, the Greenland Sea, the Hudson Bay, the Hudson Strait, the Kara Sea and the Laptev Sea. The Arctic Ocean has a coastline of forty five thousand km and has depth of more than four thousand metres (from basin).

THE ARCTIC ANIMALS

The ice of the Arctic Ocean is the home to seals

walruses and arctic foxes. The Arctic is the only place on the Earth where polar bears live.

The Arctic Ocean receives 8 inches of rain every year.
The winter temperature is minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
During summer, the temperature can climb to plus 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Arctic Ocean washes several important ports and harbors like Churchill (Canada), Murmansk (Russia) and Prudhoe Bay (US).
