Today I want to speak to you about sport and the Olympic Games in America. First of
all let’s remember all kinds of sports you know (актуализация ЛЕ при помощи
лексической паутины).
Very good! And now tell me what you know about the Olympic Games (What is the
symbol of the Olympic Games? How many rings are in the Olympic symbol? What
color are these rings? What kinds of the Olympic Games you know?).
I’m very glad that you know a lot about the Olympic Games. But let’s learn some
interesting facts about sport and the Olympic Games in America.

Sports in America
Americans love sport. They go in for sport to be in good form. Many sports are
popular in the USA: swimming, skating, squash and badminton, tennis, athletics,
bowling, archery, skiing etc. But most of all Americans like hockey, volleyball,
baseball, football and basketball. Basketball and volleyball were invented in
America.
Sport is very popular in the USA because Americans love competitions. Another
reason is that Americans use sport for teamwork and sportsmanship.
Some unusual kinds of sport originated in America. They are wind-surfing, skate-
boarding and triathlon. Triathlon includes swimming, bicycle racing and long-
distance-running. Now these sports are becoming more and more popular in
Europe.
Indeed, sport is a part of life of Americans. It is not surprising that the USA
hosted the Olympic Games 8 times: the Summer Olympic Games - 4 times and the
Winter Olympic Games – 4 times. The cities where the Olympics Games took place
are St Louis, Los Angeles, Squaw Valley, Lake Placid, Atlanta and Salt Lake City.
