READING
Time: 20 minutes
Task 1. Read the texts about holidays. Match the texts to the names of the
holidays (A-G). For each question (11 – 15), mark the correct letter A, B, C, D,
E, F or G on your answer sheet. There are TWO extra letters that you don’t
need to use.
11 This day is meant to unite people. Every year my parents invite all the relatives
to our house for a big generous dinner to show our appreciation for our ancestors.
Every year my mum prepares a huge turkey with stuffing made of porridge, rice
and mashed potatoes. Meanwhile, my dad and I decorate the house with Indian
feathers and lights.
12 This is one of the most important holidays in Muslim calendar. In order to
celebrate it you have to go through a very strict fasting period that lasts 30 days.
On the 31
st
day, when the fasting is over, religious Muslims visit each other and
pray for the families of their loved ones. You are also supposed to put the best food
on the table and greet all the guests that come to your house invited or not.
13 I’ve been looking forward to this holiday for the whole year. The fresh smell of
light blizzard makes the atmosphere of this holiday so unique and authentic. Every
year my family and I go to the woods to pick the most beautiful pine, bring it home
and go to the church for the evening service.
14 This is the coolest holiday of all. Every time I get together with my mates, dress
up and go ‘trick-or-treating’ around the block. Then we go back to my room and
share our booty. After the sweets are sorted out, we pick the spookiest films and
watch them all night long while eating our candies. Some say it’s possible to
contact ghosts on this day.
15 This holiday is one of my favourites. Every year this day occurs on a different
day and that makes this holiday so special. Every evening before this holiday my
mum and sister colour and decorate eggs. They bake traditional cross-buns as well.
By the way, the traditional egg-fight is my favourite part of the holiday.

Task 2. Read the text about the Bermuda Triangle. For each question (16 –
20), mark the correct letter A, B or C on your answer sheet.
Even though you won’t find it on a map, the Bermuda Triangle is a very real
place. In the past there have been many stories of disappearing ships, planes and
people. Although there is a reasonable explanation for many incidents, some are
still a mystery.
The Bermuda Triangle is located off the coast of Florida between Miami,
Puerto Rico and the Bermudas. It covers about 500 000 square miles of
the Atlantic Ocean. It is also known as the Devil’s Triangle because Bermuda was
once called Islands of the Devils. The coasts around the island are surrounded by
dangerous reefs that ships ran into throughout the centuries.
Unusual events around the Bermuda Triangle go back to
the voyages of Christopher Columbus. He sometimes reported that
compass readings were wrong. Many journalists have tried to prove that a
number of accidents and unusual things have happened in the region. Some cases
show that there are no explanations for them.
One of the best-known incidents is the disappearance of Flight 19 during a
training exercise of the US Navy. In December, 1945 five American bombers left
Fort Lauderdale, Florida on a routine mission. 14 crew members disappeared after
sending several radio messages. When a rescue plane went to search for the Navy
bombers, it also vanished.
What went wrong during the mission is not fully known. Compasses showed
wrong directions and visibility was bad so the flight leader decided
to navigate by landmarks which he saw below. Then there was a sudden storm and
radio contact broke off. Wrecked parts of Flight 19 have never been recovered.
Ships have also disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. Among them is the
Mary Celeste, an American merchant ship, in 1872. The ship was sailing
from New York to Genoa, but was later found off the coast of Africa without any
crew members on board. Although there is no evidence that the Mary Celeste even
entered the Bermuda Triangle, there are many
who connect its mysterious disappearance with the area.
There are many theories about why so many airplanes and ships have
disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. Some suggest that there are special magnetic
fields that cause unknown physical forces. Others say that the lost continent of
Atlantis sank in the region causing mysterious events. There is even a theory about
unknown chemicals in the waters of the Atlantic.
Some experts, however, point out that the region north of the Caribbean is
not as safe as it may seem. It is one of two places on Earth where the
compass points to the geographic North Pole. It is also a region in which
the weather is unpredictable and where storms can emerge quickly. There are
strong currents because of shallow places and deep trenches in the ocean. These
factors can confuse even experienced sailors.
Over 1,000 people were killed in The Bermuda Triangle during the
20th century. Scientists have concluded that this figure is normal and most
disappearances have a logical explanation. The myth of the Bermuda Triangle,
however, remains.
16 According to the text, The Bermuda Triangle is a real place
A) located near the Devil's Triange.
B) situated in the Atlantic Ocean.
C) easily found on a map.
17 What is NOT TRUE about the incident with Flight 19?
A) The compasses on board the plane were broken.
B) The pilot had to navigate by landmarks.
C) There was a storm that day.
18 What is TRUE about the Mary Celeste?
A) It is known that the ship had been to the Bermuda Triangle.
B) It was sailing from America to Italy.
C) The ship was found with some people on board.
19 Which theory about disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle WAS NOT
mentioned in the text?
A) The waters of the Atlantic may have some mysterious substance.
B) The sunk continent of Atlantis makes the incidents happen.
C) Storms there cause unknown physical forces.
20 According to the text, experts think that
A) the weather is changeable in the region.
B) the Bermuda Triangle is a low-risk place.
C) there is no logical explanation for most incidents in the region.
