Ход урока
Dear students,
I’ve been teaching at school for already 24 years. I’ve taught English, but for the first I teach children.
I mean you are the men who are going to develop, advance and work out our nearest future, and there
are many things you are able to change to have cleaner and greener environment. Today’s lesson is
very important for all of us. The theme is “Our fragile planet. How to protect it”. Grammatically
we’ll deal with the modals or the modal verbs: ought to, must, have to, may, and might.
Now let’s revise them.
Modal Verbs
Here is a list of the modal verbs in English:
can
could
may
might
will
would
must
shall
should
ought to
Modals are different from normal verbs:
1. They don't use an 's' for the third person singular.
2. They make questions by inversion ('she can go' becomes 'can she go?').
3. They are followed directly by the infinitive of another verb (without 'to').
Probability:
First, they can be used when we want to say how sure we are that something happened / is happening /
will happen. We often call these 'modals of deduction' or 'speculation' or 'certainty' or 'probability'.
For example:
It's snowing, so it must be very cold outside.
I don't know where John is. He could have missed the train.
This bill can't be right. £200 for two cups of coffee!
Ability
We use 'can' and 'could' to talk about a skill or ability.
For example:
She can speak six languages.
My grandfather could play golf very well.
I can't drive.
Obligation and Advice
We can use verbs such as 'must' or 'should' to say when something is necessary or unnecessary, or to
give advice.
For example:
Children must do their homework.
We have to wear a uniform at work.
You should stop smoking.
Permission
We can use verbs such as 'can', 'could' and 'may' to ask for and give permission. We also use modal
verbs to say something is not allowed.
For example:
Could I leave early today, please?
You may not use the car tonight.
Can we swim in the lake?
Habits
We can use 'will' and 'would' to talk about habits or things we usually do, or did in the past.
For example:

Слайд 1
I want you to be very attentive not only to do correctly the tasks, you will be given, but also, and that is
the main purpose of the lesson, to understand how deep the environmental problems are nowadays and
what you can/should/must/have to do to protect the nature and maybe to solve some of these
problems.
The Earth is a lovely planet we live in. It has given support to all kinds of life during thousands of
years. Now man is killing it. Everything that is being done for more comfortable and better life turned
out to be a real disaster for the nature and the wildlife. Animals, plants and other forms of living things
would have never chosen such environment to live in. But they HAVE TO.
One of the greatest problems that the world is facing today is environmental pollution, increasing with
every passing year and causing grave and irreparable damage to the earth. Environmental pollution
consists of five basic types of pollution, namely, air, water, soil, noise and light.
Now let’s view some videos on how people are destroying the natural habitants of thousands of
animals and what danger it presents for human beings.
Слайд 2
Ex. 1
Continue the sentences:
1. Air pollution is cause by …
2. The thick grey cloud above cities is …
3. On the streets and roads there are millions of …
4. Rivers are polluted by …
5. Is it a solution to wear … on the faces?
6. The average temperature is getting higher which is cause of
7. … are harmful to the environment.
8. Every year tons of … is poured into the seas as a result … are dying or actually disappearing.
9. Go to the seaside and you will see …
10. … is becoming dirtier and dirtier.
Now let’s sort the types of pollutions step by step, give their definitions and try to find the answer of
the question “What can I do in this situation?” Air pollution is the most harmful form of pollution to
our environment.
Evidence of increasing air pollution is seen in lung cancer, asthma, allergies, and
various breathing problems along with severe and irreparable damage to flora and fauna.
Water pollution has caused release of industrial waste products into lakes, rivers, and made marine
life no longer hospitable. Humans pollute water with large-scale disposal of garbage, ashes and other
household waste.
Noise pollution, soil pollution and light pollution too are damaging the environment at an alarming
rate. The largest part of noise pollution comes from the greatest invention called vehicle. It is
responsible for about ninety percent of all unwanted noise worldwide. Soil pollution is a result of acid
rains, polluted water, fertilizers etc., which leads to bad crops. Light pollution includes light trespass,
over-illumination and astronomical interference.
Ex. 2
Now it’s time to ask you some questions. Do you remember tag-questions? Read the sentences on the
screen, make up tag-questions and let your classmates answer them.
1. People should keep the planet suitable for living, …?
2. Water pollution must be controlled by chemical means,… ?
3. I think people will be able to solve noise pollution in the future, … ?
4. We can recycle aluminum cans, used paper, metal, …?
5. Children must not smoke as well as adults, … ?
6. Children in many developed countries learn about environmental problems, …?
7. Sometimes children break rules of keeping the nature clean while visiting the countryside, …?
Слайд 3
Let’s watch another video.
Ex. 3
Now it’s time for you to make conclusion and write sentences using the modals.
E.g. I should stop throwing litter away.
Предложение, составленные учениками:
I must turn off water while cleaning my teeth.
I must plant more trees.
I must turn off lights when leaving the room.
I must use less computer and be more in the open air.
I must tell my mum not to take plastic bags in the shops and have bags in environmentally friendly
materials.
I can make houses for birds to live in wintertime.
I can collect old books and newspapers and carry them to the recycling centres.
I should ask my father not to take me to school by car. I can go on foot, as I live not so far from school.
I should use both sides of paper, which I haven’t done earlier.
We will try to avoid buying drinks in plastic bottles. I don’t want my children to live in the “plastic
world.
Слайд 4
Dear children, I’m really happy because most of you have used the modal verb “must, which is a very
strong modal.
Now I am going to show you another video. I’m sure you all know this talented man. He’s an
Armenian-American singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and poet. He
is best known as the lead vocalist, keyboardist in the group System of a Down. Of course, you’ve
guessed that it’s our compatriot Serj Tankian. But maybe not all of you know that he’s also a political
activist. The song you are going to listen to is about our planet and about people who are carelessly
destroying it. First time listening to it, it will be difficult to understand all words. Here are the lyrics. I
usually don’t give homework on such lessons but this is a little bit different. I want you to translate or
to find the translation of this song. Thank you in advance.
We're the day birds
Deciding to fly against the sky
Within our dreams, we all wake up
To kiss the ones who are born to die
We're the greying herds
Hurting each other with our lives
Within our dreams, we all wake up
To kiss the ones who are born
Born to die, born to die
The drum fish
They beached themselves in hara-kiri
The blackbirds
They fell in thousands from the sky
Their red wings
Streaming down from the higher seas
Deflected by the ground
They crowned the sun,
They crowned the sun,
But I believe that they are free,
When their time was done,
They were drowned by the only One.
But I believe that they are free
Washed by the sun
Our statues
The soaring edifice of our times
Detracted from the ways of the wise
The future will view all history as a crime
So father, tell us when is the time to rise
They crowned the sun
They crowned the sun
But I believe that they are free
When their time was done
They were drowned by the only one
But I believe that they are free
They crowned the sun
They crowned the sun
But I believe that they are free
And we believe that they are free
Cus' I believe that they are me
Washed by the sun.
Дорогие ребята, будущее нашей хрупкой планеты в руках человека и в том числе в наших
руках. Давайте беречь её и помнить, что, когда мы говорим «дом», мы должны знать, что это
не только те несколько уютных комнат со всеми удобствами, а это большой и нуждающиеся в
нашей помощи земной шар.
