4. Animal hotel
5. Animal protection
6. People of animal lovers
7. Tastes are changing
8. Homeless animals
A. Kaluzhane like animals very much. Pets: dogs, cats, horses, ducks, canaries, chickens and
other friends of men have a much better life in Kaluga region, than anywhere else. In
Kaluga region they have special dog shops selling food, clothes and other things for dogs.
There are dog hair-dressing saloons and dog cemeteries. Kaluzhane arrange dog’s shows
and organize dogs’ supper parties for winners of dogs’ competitions. They do all they can
to make animals feel well in their home and outside their houses too.
B. Every year thousands of animals arrive at Kaluga Airport, some stay the night there; others
stay several weeks. In one month, for example, special staff looked after 30 000 creatures:
birds, insects, fish, monkeys and other animals. All animals have special treatment so that
their owners may not worry about them while they are away. Kaluzhane believe that they
are the only people on the Russian Federation that is really kind to its animals.
C. In Kaluga region people have always loved animals. Kaluga region was the first area to
create a society to protect animals in 1826. The society doesn’t exist today, but there is the
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and it is called The New ark”. It finds
new owners for 50 000 homeless animals every year. Besides, “The New ark” organizes
different public events and is involved in lots of activities in the sphere of protecting
animals’ rights. “The New ark” also provided charity support to animal shelters.
D. Today, half of the households in Kaluga region have a pet. Cats are especially popular
because many people who live alone and go to work like independent pets. Other popular
pets are dogs, birds, rabbits, fish, guinea-pigs and hamsters. However, in recent years
Kaluzhane began to show love for more exotic animals. You can come across such exotic
pets as crocodiles, spiders, cobras and lizards.
E. Strays are animals without owners or homes. Some of the strays have simply lost their
owners but in other cases their owners have abandoned them, especially in the case of dogs.
People often get tired of pets when they get too big or make a mess. Especially at the New
Year, when people buy cats and dogs as “cute presents” but then they are too lazy to take
care for the animals and turn them out. “The New ark” tries to find owners for these
animals.
F. The hospital helps animal owners who pay expensive vets’ bills. Man of the owners are
old or live alone with their pets. All the nurses have to do a two-year course before they
can work there. They need to learn to give an anesthetic, do X-rays and put on bandages.
It’s not easy when you have to put a bandage on a rabbit’s broken legs or an owl’s wing.
The nurses agree that the best part of the job is the satisfaction when the animal recovers
and the owners are happy.
G. For many years, animals have been taken for granted and always being used for the benefit.
Animals have proved to be an easy target for circuses, poaching, hunting, testing and
fashion purposes. Animal rights group “The New ark” has achieved much success raising
awareness and keeping the issues in the public eye. Some bans on drug or cosmetic testing
on animals have been implemented and even elk-hunting has been banned by the Kaluga
region government.

The First Day in Kaluga.
I wish to give you a look at the first day or two in Kaluga as seen through the eyes of a
young visitor to the region on a temporary student visa. For most visitors, the first taste of
Kaluga is touchdown at Kaluga Airport which is only a 1000 rubles’ taxi fare from the
heart of the city. As soon as on gets off the plane, the busy, commercial atmosphere of
Kaluga immediately becomes apparent. The traffic is not dense, and moves fast. The
buildings are old and the weather is usually cloudy. Many students arrange to stay with an
Kaluga citizen’s family while they study at the State University in Kaluga and other
colleges and are therefore met at the airport.
Having met the family and settled into his or her new home most families in the
city live in semi-detached houses - a visitor is usually tired after the trip and takes a day or
two to recover from jet lag. But it isn’t long before the desire to look around and discover
the sights and sounds of Kaluga overcomes the shock of being in a foreign country. The
second on the list is a trip to the University chosen while overseas as the place to study
English in Kaluga region.
Most colleges are located close to the city and are surprisingly modern and
welcoming. They are always within easy travel distance of a bus route or a trolleybus route,
and the buses are modern and comfortable, although it is more expensive. than taking a
taxi.
Most commuters to the city prefer the trolleybus because they are extensive and
much faster and cheaper.
On intake day, students gather in the common room of their chosen faculty or
college and are given an orientation to the program they are about to embark upon. After
they have been welcomed to the college or faculty and know a little more about how the
school works, it is time to take a short test to determine the best class for them to begin
their studies.
Come lunchtime, of course, it is necessary to find a place to eat. Some students
sensibly bring their own lunch or else find a café nearby that suits their place? Of course,
Kaluga has a vast number of cafes and restaurants at which one can choose food from
countries all over the world, and prices are generally quite acceptable.
In the afternoon a student usually discovers that the way in which the language
is taught in a Russian environment is different to what they are used to in their home
country. Some students might be surprised at the difference in a teaching methods. Students
in Kaluga colleges and the State University are always treated as adults and the ones to
perform is therefore on the student. Attending their first lesson of the course, they meet
their classmates for the next few weeks. It is time to get to know each other and the
opportunity for an exchange of personal information. After class, students make their way
to home, enlightened and sometimes a little confused about what is expected of them. But
most agree that the experience they have got on their first day of college is worth all the
hardship of leaving the comfort of home.
10 Most visitors to Kaluga arrive at Kaluga Airport.

Now we are ready to start.
Speaker A
Am I happy where I live now? I am. Its because my town Kaluga is modern and beautiful. Its
very comfortable. I can do whatever I want. The neighbourhood is smart, citizens are nice and it
actually is very convenient because there are many stores, cinemas and restaurants around. Buses
always run on time. I really like it.
Speaker B
Im not happy where I live at all. I’m terrified to go home at night because of the hooligans and
the drug dealers. I am afraid of burglars when I am at home. My neighbour’s car was stolen from
his garage at night and never found. We also have a big rat problem there are thousands of them
in the streets even at daytime. So, I can say there is nothing positive about my hometown.
Speaker C
There’s only one bad thing about my hometown Rusinovo. It’s so far from big cities. So, there’s
not much do here. There’s not much entertainment. There are no restaurants or movie theatres,
so it’s very quiet. Some people would say very boring, but I think you have to find other things
to do like learning to play musical instruments or playing chess. It’s also a good idea to take up
writing stories. Living in a small town makes a difference.
Speaker D
Yeah, I’m really happy. I really like the fact that my family are close by and that I have really
good friends close by. I know my home town Balabanovo is really small and quiet. I’s a very
close knit community and I like that. It’s not always ideal because there’s not so much to do,
but there are a lot of good places to go to. Bright lights of a big city are within an hour’s drive.
So really I’m quite fortunate. I do not fancy living in a big city.
Speaker E
Am I happy where I live now? I would have to say “no”. Im not happy. I live next to a really
busy street that has traffic twenty-four hours a day and a hospital just down the block, so I hear
sirens every day and it’s one of the busiest and biggest towns in Kaluga region. So I would have
to say “no”. it’s too busy and too loud and filled with pollution.
Упражнение 3
Вы услышите разговор двух подростков. В заданиях 3-8 в поле ответа запишите цифру,
которая соответствует номеру правильного ответа. Вы услышите запись дважды.

Now we are ready to start.
Dasha:
Hi Anton. I told Dr. Fedorov that you were under the weather and he gave the
details of the net assignment so you can get on with it when you’re feeling better.
Anton:
Oh, thanks, Dasha. Another essay?
Dasha:
Actually, it’s not an essay. We’ve got to give a presentation to the rest of the
group in Ethnomir in Kaluga region and prepare handouts for them.
Anton:
We? Is it group work?
Dasha:
It’s you, me, Sasha and Misha. It’s a traveling planning project. We’ve got six
weeks to do it.
Anton:
So, who’s doing what?
Dasha:
Well, we had a chat and we thought you could help Misha. Misha will do that.
He’s good at track planning and navigation. Both Sasha and I have good finding
and research information skills.
Anton:
What about arranging when we can meet to check on each other’s progress.
Dasha:
That’s going to be a bit tricky. Sasha won’t be here from next Monday to
Saturday as she’s got to have some minor surgery.
Anton:
Nothing to worry about, I hope.
Dasha:
No, it’s just something routine. But Misha will be away at the weerend and won’t
be back until Tuesday or even Wednesday. His brother’s getting married and he’s
going to be best man.
Anton:
That means neither of them will have much time to be working on our project in
the next couple of weeks then.
Dasha:
No, and as we’ll all gave to be studying for our mid-term test as well, I think you
and I will be bearing the brunt of the work in theinitial stages, Anton.
Anton:
That’s fair enough Dasha but I hope they’ll pull their weight later. I don’t want
you and I to have to do all the work. We’ve got to pass these tests too!
Dasha:
You’re right but I don’t think Sasha and Misha are the type of people to shirk
their responsibilities. Anyway. When are we going to have this meeting?
Anton:
What about next Wednesday?
Dasha:
Well. Sasha will be fine by then but Misha isn’t sure if he’ll be back or not so
what about the following day, to the certain?
Anton:
Agreed. But where? We all live in different parts of the town so how about the
cafe Lozhka?
Dasha:
Don’t you think it would be rater noisy?
Anton:
Not if we meet in the morning. I haven’t got any lectures until 2 o’clock.
Dasha:
None of us has. No, wait, Misha has one at 11 but maybe he could miss that this
time and copy up the notes. Let’s say we’ll meet at the café but a bit later, and
noon.
Anton:
Good, that’s sorted out. Now, who’s actually going to give the presentation?
Sasha has such a quit voice and Misha’s Vologda accent is difficult to listen to.
Dasha:
It’s not that strong! Sometimes I can’t work out what you are saying, Anton!
Anton:
OK. I admit my speech is no that clear. But remember we have a couple of
Chinese students in the group. It wouldn’t be fair on them to have to listen to any
of us.
Dasha:
We can decide that later. We don’t have to worry about that yet. I’ll have to rush.
I’ve got a lecture in 10 minutes. So, get well soon.
Anton:
Thanks, Dasha. We’ll be in touch. Bye.
You have 30 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 30 seconds.)
Now you will listen to the dialogues again. (Repeat.)
This is the end of the task. Now you have 20 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 30
seconds.)
