Lesson 1
1. Countries and nationalities.
The topic of our lesson today is “Countries and Nationalities”. At first let’s read the poem
“Bridges” by Edith Segal.
If I were a builder,
I’d make big bridges,
Bridges to faraway lands:
To Asia, to Africa, South America,
Bridges to Europe, Iceland, Iraq.
I’d walk round the world
To visit the people,
And when we shook hands
We’d make little bridges.
Here is one of the translations of this poem:
Был бы я строитель,
Строил я б мосты,
Чтоб сдружились крепко
Он, и я и ты.
Построил б мост я в Азию,
В Исландию, в Ирак,
Соединил б Евразию и Африку.
Вот так!
И мы б ходили в гости
Друг к другу, я и ты,
2
И между нами были бы
Маленькие мосты!
Look at the blackboard. You can see a lot of flags of different countries. Look at the flag and
name the country, please.
Now let’s write the name of this country on the blackboard. People of different nationalities
live in these countries. I’ll name the country and you’ll name the nationality and its capital:

What is the population of the world? Do you know? No, then read the text and tell the class
about the new things that you have leaned from the text.
Population
The word “population” comes from Latin populus, meaning “the people”. It is used to
refer to a group of persons in a place or an area which may vary greatly in size in a village or
town, in a region or country, or in the world. We usually think of population in terms of size,
that is, numbers of people, but we may also be concerned with their characteristics such as age
and sex, level of education, and occupation.
The population of the world has increased over time. Since 1950 the rate of increase has
been especially fast. Figures issued by the United Nations indicate that in the mid-1980s, there
were 4,840 million people in the world, and that has increased to 6,100 million by the year
2001. And by the year 2050 it is likely to be over 10,000 million.
The World’s Biggest
The longest river is the Nile River in the Northeast Africa, 6650 km.
The highest waterfall is in Venezuela, it’s 979 m high.
The largest continent is Asia, with an area of 43,4 million sq km.
The highest mountain is Mount Everest in India, which is 8848 m high.
The greatest ocean depth is 300 km east of the Mariana Islands 11022 m.
The lowest point on the earth is the Dead Sea, Palestine, which is 416 m below
sea level.
The biggest flower is the rafflesia, which grows mostly in Malaya. The flower is
about 100 centimetres in diameter and weighs about 11 kilograms.
The longest river in Europe is the Volga. Its length is 3530 km.
Look at the compass points and read the key:
N north
S south
W west
E east
NE = north-east
SE = south-east
4
SW = south-west
NW = north-west
Let’s make up the dialogue:
Lin \ Japan \ Tokyo \ in the south-east of Japan \ Japanese
- Where’s Lin from?
- She’s from Japan.
- What is the capital of Japan?
- Tokyo is the capital of Japan.
- Where exactly is it?
- It’s in the south-east of Japan.
- What nationality is she?
- Lin is Japanese.
Ask and answer questions:
Pedro \ Portugal \ Lisbon (W)
Kurt \ Germany \ Berlin (NE)
Fatima \ Turkey \ Ankara (NW)
Pierre \ France \ Paris (N)
Mary \ Canada \ Ottawa (SE)
-Open your textbook (English VI, Afanasyeva) ex 2 p 95; ex 3 p 95; ex 4 p 96;
-Ex 5 p 97 (do in your exercise-books)
Now look at some book and film characters. Say where they are from.

Character
Country
Author
Now you know that Sherlock Holmes is from Britain. But the official name of this country is the
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (or the UK). It’s a very interesting
country.
Answer the following questions:
1. What is the capital of the UK?
2. What are the four main nationalities in the United Kingdom?
3. Is the official language English or Russian?
Read the text and tell the class about the new things that you have learned from the text:
Who sailed around the World?
America was discovered in 1492. It took many years before Ferdinand Magellan, a
Portuguese explorer, made the first trip around the world. He sailed from Spain in 1519 and
6
only in 1522 very few of his men returned home. Magellan himself did not live to see his home
again. He was killed in 1521 in the Philippine Islands, which he discovered.
Nowadays every pupil can find Magellan’s name on the map of the world: the Strait of
Magellan connects Europe with the Far East by a western route. That is the route which
Magellan was the first to use when he was sailing around the world.
Captain James Cook, an Englishman, sailed around the world as often as three times. In
1768 he began his first round the world trip. He rounded Cape Horn from the Atlantic and
returned to England in 1770. Two years later he made a trip round Antarctica that lasted three
years. In 1778 he explored the northwest coast of America. On his return voyage he was killed
by Hawaiian natives in 1779.
***
We live on the planet that is called the Earth. It’s the third planet from the sun. The
greatest part of it is taken by the waters of the World Ocean.
The world’s oceans and seas cover nearly 71 % of the earth’s
surface. Large masses of land surrounded by oceans and seas
are called continents. They are like big islands. Looking at the
map of the world we can see that there are six continents.
They are Eurasia (Europe and Asia combined) which is the
largest continent, Africa, North America, South America,
Australia and Antarctica.
Some continents are joined to each other, and some are completely surrounded by
water (Antarctica and Australia). Some contain a lot of countries, and some only a few. Some
people say that there are seven continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America,
Oceania (or Australia) and South America. There are usually very many countries on each
continent. For example, there are more than 40 countries in Africa, but there is only one large
country in Australia. It has got the same name as the continent.
Here are some interesting facts about each of the continents that make them
unique (different to the others).
Africa
Contains the longest river in the world the Nile.
Contains the largest desert in the world the Sahara.
Contains more continents than any other continent.
Most of the world’s gold and diamonds come from Africa.
7
Antarctica
Is the only continent completely covered in ice.
Is the only continent that is uninhabited by humans.
Asia
Is the only continent joined to two others.
Contains the biggest nation in the world China.
Contains the highest point on Earth Mount Everest.
Is the only continent where tigers are found in the wild.
Europe
Had a lot of colonies in the world.
Both World Wars happened here.
There are about 193 countries in the world. The largest country in the world is Russia. The
smallest country is the Vatican. People of different nationalities live in the world. Each country
has a national flag, anthem, an official language and its own traditions
and customs.
North America
Is joined to Asia by ice in winter (Bering Sea).
Is the only continent that lies entirely in the Northern and Western
Hemispheres.
Contains the largest fresh water lake lake Superior.
Australia
Contains only one country.
Has more sheep than people.
Is the only continent that lies entirely in the Southern and Eastern
Hemispheres.
Is the largest island but the smallest continent.
8
Is called upside-down country, because when we have summer it has
winter.
South America
Contains the most Southern city Puentas Arenas.
Contains the largest river system The Amazon.
Questions:
1. How many continents are there on the Earth?
2. Could you name any countries from each continent?
3. What is the largest\ smallest continent?
4. What is the largest\ smallest country?
5. Name five countries.
6. Name the capitals of Germany, Spain, Italy, the UK, Canada.
7. Name the countries and the continent to which belong the following capitals: Delhi, Hanoi,
Beijing, London, Brasilia, Ottawa, Cairo, Canberra.
8. Name countries which we can find in Europe \ Asia.
So, we learned, that there are six continents and every continent lies in at least two
different hemispheres. Let’s go on travelling through countries and continents.
We live on the planet Earth. It is round. If you look at the Earth from the space you will
be able to see land, seas, oceans, continents and even countries.
There are four oceans: the Pacific Ocean (the largest one), the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian
Ocean and the Arctic Ocean.
Let’s look at the world map again. What is something that all continents have in
common? ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Which continent is the unusual? Why? ………………………………………………………………………
Which two continents have the largest areas with really hot weather all of the time?
………………………………………………………………………………………………….
9
Let’s compare and contrast two continents:
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

The world is a sphere. It is shaped like a ball. The best way to represent
the world is not by a map, but a globe. How can we explain where anything is
on the globe? We could say it is next to something else, or at the top or bottom,
or even on the left or right, but these are not geographical terms. In
geographical terms we have to describe by using a compass.
The main points, or cardinal points, on the compass are North, South,
East and West. The globe can be divided into half across the middle, or from top
to bottom. Each of these halves is called a hemisphere. The word hemisphere
means half (hemi) of a sphere. We can have four different
hemispheres. Right and left, or top and bottom.
Let’s take two oranges and a sharp knife.
Cut the first orange in half from top to bottom.
Cut the second one across the middle.
These are the two different ways you can divide the globe into hemispheres. You
have four hemispheres.
Go back to the points of the compass. The top is North (N), and the bottom is South (S). West
(W) is on the left and East (E) is on the right.
_____
Write the letter in each of the areas.
Now we need to use a little grammar here. North, South, East and West are nouns, but we
need adjectives to describe which hemispheres is which. So we call them the Northern
Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere, the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere.
10
Answer the questions:
1. How many hemispheres are there?
2. What are they called?
3. Which hemisphere is at the bottom \ at the top?
4. Which is on the left \ on the right?
Now draw a circle. Put an X at the top of it and O at the bottom. Draw a line from the X
to the O across the front of the circle. Mark the front with an F. Now you have divided the circle
into the halves, left and right. Draw a line around the centre of the circle. Now you have a top
and bottom half.
The line running around the middle of the globe, dividing the Northern and Southern
Hemispheres is called the Equator. It is shown on maps as O degrees Latitude. The length of
Earth’s equator is over 40 thousand km. The line dividing the globe into the Eastern and
Western Hemispheres is actually two geographical lines. The one running down the front of the
globe is known as the Greenwich Meridian. It passes through the Greenwich Observatory in
London, and is measured as O degrees longitude. The line dividing the globe into the Eastern
and Western Hemispheres on the back of the globe is called the International Dateline. It is
measured at 180 degrees West or East.
Answer the questions:
1. What is the line called which divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres?
2. Can you name one country this line passes through?
3. Name the two lines dividing the globe into Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
4. Which two hemispheres do you live in?
