A_ Sophie was frightened but she knew what to do. She quickly rolled under her
bed. The room was still shaking. One of Sophie's pictures fell off the wall and it
smashed loudly. Sophie screamed. Then she heard her father shouting her name. He
was trying to open her bedroom door, but the door was stuck. Sophie screamed again
and started to cry. It was just then that the shaking stopped and her father burst
through the door. "It's OK, Sophie," he said. "You're safe now."
B _ Sophie and her parents went outside. All
their neighbours were standing in the street. Everyone was scared, but they all
felt happy to be alive. Sophie's dad hugged her and said, "You're a brave girl, Sophie.
I'm very proud of you."
C_ It was late at night. Sophie was sleeping.
Yellow light shone into her bedroom from the street-lamp outside the window, but
there was no sound of traffic. Everything was quiet.
D _ Suddenly there was a low rumbling noise
and Sophie's bed rocked gently. Sophie woke up, looked at the ceiling and saw that
her bedroom light was swinging. She sat up and looked around. She didn't know what
was happening. Then there was another rumbling noise. The bed shook so violently
that Sophie fell onto the floor. She felt the floor moving under her. It was as if the
whole house was jumping up and down.

The Early Warning
Max and Hugh were almost at the top of the volcano. They were both exhausted
after climbing Mount Alamana, so they decided to camp for the night.
They were sleeping peacefully in their tent, when suddenly a loud rumbling noise
woke them both up. "What was that?" said Hugh, "It's the volcano", replied Max.
"Let's get out of here, now!". They ran down the mountainside leaving all their
belongings behind them. They didn't stop until they arrived at the village at the foot
of the volcano.
"What's wrong?" asked the policeman as they ran into the small police station.
"Mount Alamana is about to erupt", said Hugh. “Warn the villagers!”. Soon everyone
was climbing into cars and trucks hurrying to leave the village. Just as the last car
drove away there was a huge explosion and the sky filled with thick smoke as the
volcano erupted.
Later, the grateful villagers held a party in honour of the two climbers. "You saved
our lives", they said to Max and Hugh and shook their hands. The two men felt very
embarrassed, but also proud of themselves for saving the villagers from the volcano
with their early warning
