DISASTERS AND CATASTROPHES What Does It Mean? Disaster – an event such as an accident, flood or storm that causes a lot of harm. Catastrophe – a terrible event that causes a lot of damage or death Flood – a very large amount of water that covers an area that is usually dry. Earthquake – a sudden shaking of the Earth’s surface. Eruption – when a volcano erupts and sends smoke and fire into the sky. Avalanche – a large amount of snow that falls down the mountain. Tsunami - series of ocean waves that are generated by large movements or disturbances on the ocean's floor. Hurricane – a violent storm with very strong fast winds. Drought – a long period of dry weather when there is not enough water. Forest Fire – a case when the forest is burnt by the uncontrolled fire.
