The History of Money
Can you imagine the world without money? It is quite impossible. Money – they say – makes the world go
round. Why is that so? Well, think of all the situations in which you have to pay for the things you buy – like
food, clothes, medicine, newspapers, or for the services you get, like a new hairstyle or car repairs. Think of
the entertainment you have to pay for – tickets to concerts, sports matches, favourite books, CDs and
holidays. You can have it all if you’ve got the money.
Money has played an important role in every civilization.
It has taken various forms and has changed many times over the centuries. The first form of payment was the
exchange of goods. People usually exchanged animal skins and meat, fruit and vegetables, clothes and
precious stones. In ancient Egypt they used metal bars which were cut into smaller parts if necessary. In the
7th century ВС the first coins appeared. They were usually made of silver or gold and their value depended on
the amount of metal in each coin. With time, coins became very popular and many countries produced their
own currency.
The introduction of paper money – banknotes – in the 17th century was the beginning of banking systems in
many European countries. Since then, banks have offered a wide range of services like loans, bank accounts
and many others. Today, people pay for things in different ways: they pay in cash, by cheque or by credit
card. The last one, it seems, is the most convenient form of payment. Many people believe that one day
money in the form of coins, banknotes, cheques and magnetic cards will totally disappear and that all buying
and selling will be done via the Internet.

Catherine was five years old. She often went to the shops with her mother. She liked toys very much, and she

Catherine’s mother did not usually go to the shops on Saturdays, because she always had a lot of work at

The man, the boy and the donkey
This is a very old story, but it teaches us something that is still true today.
One day, a wise man said to his young son, "Come with me and I will show you something." The father got onto his
donkey and told his son to walk behind him.
On the road, some people pointed at the man and said, "Look at that man. Why doesn't he let the boy ride the
donkey?" The man and the boy heard this, and so they changed places. The boy rode and the man walked.
A few minutes later they passed some other people. The people pointed and said, "Look at that boy. How can he ride
while his old father walks?" So the man got onto the donkey with the boy.
Then they passed some other people, who said, "That poor little donkey can't carry two people. They're much too
heavy." So they got off the donkey and they both walked.
They walked through a village, and people laughed at them, saying, "Look at those two fools! Why do they walk

it." So they carried the donkey, and all the people in the village lauglied at them, saying, "Look! They're carrying the

The young giraffe
You and I learnt to walk when we were a few months old, but baby giraffes can walk after only twenty
minutes. Baby giraffes live in a dangerous world. Lions and other animals like to eat them, so the babies must
learn quickly. They learn to ran fast and to stay on their feet almost all of the time. Even at night, giraffes do not
lie down. They stand by a tree and sleep. Big giraffes have long legs and they can ran at sixty kilometers per hour.
The English word giraffe comes from the Arabic word xirapha. The word means, 'runs fast'.
Giraffes also have very long tongues. A giraffe's tongue can be fifty centimeters long! Giraffes use their
tongues for cleaning themselves. They can even clean their ears with their tongues! Their tongues are
important for other things too. A giraffe's favourite food is green leaves from acacia trees. These trees have
sharp thorns, but the giraffe's tongue can go between the thorns. The giraffe's long neck is important because the
best leaves are at the tops of the trees. Giraffes love these leaves, and they eat for about eighteen hours every

E-mail from England
From: Patrick and Cathy
To: Vasilyok, Andrey, Natasha
Subject: pen friends
Hi everybody
We saw your names on the Pen Friends list. You all said you wanted to get e-mail from English children. So here
we are! We live near Oxford, in the south of England. We are eleven
years old (Kathy) and thirteen years old (Patrick).
We go to school in Oxford. Our school has 400 boys and girls between 8 and 13. We have lessons Monday to
Saturday from 9 am to lunch time. (School lunches are horrible!) After lunch, we usually have lessons or sport
until 4.15. We have lessons in English, French, maths, science, history, geography, art and a few other things.
Kathy's favourite subjects are maths and science. Her worst subject is geography. Patrick's favourite
subjects are art and French. His worst subject is maths. There are three terms in the year, and we do different
sports in each term.
Autumn term: rugby for boys, netball for girls
Winter -term: football and hockey
Summer term: cricket, swimming, tennis and athletics
We like sports but we're not very good at any of them! At home we like playing computer games, sending e-mail
to our friends, cycling (Kathy) and photography (Patrick). Write and tell us about you and your schools in Belarus
and Russia.
