A. The mountains of Scotland (we call them the Highlands) are a wild and
beautiful part of Europe. A golden eagle flies over the mountains. A deer walks
through the silence of the forest. Salmon and trout swim in the clean, pure water of
the rivers. Some say that not only fish swim in the deep water of Loch Ness. Speak
to the people living by the Loch. Each person has a story of the monster, and some
have photographs.
B. Tresco is a beautiful island with no cars, crowds or noisejust flowers, birds,
long sandy beaches and the Tresco Abbey Garden. John and Wendy Pyatt welcome
you to the Island Hotel, famous for delicious food, comfort and brilliant service.
You will appreciate superb accommodation, free saunas and the indoor swimming
pool.
C. The Camel and Wildlife Safari is a unique mixture of the traditional and modern.
Kenya's countryside suits the Safari purposes exceptionally well. Tourists will have
a chance to explore the bush country near Samburu, to travel on a camel back or to
sleep out under the stars. Modern safari vehicles are always available for those who
prefer comfort.
D. Arrival can be the hardest part of a trip. It is late, you are road-weary, and
everything is new and strange. You need an affordable place to sleep, something to
eat and drink, and probably a way to get around. But in general, it's a wonderful
trip, full of wonderful and unusual places. Whether it is the first stop on a trip or the
fifth city visited, every traveller feels a little overwhelmed stepping onto a new
street in a new city.
E. No zoo has enough money to provide basic habitats or environments for all the
species they keep. Most animals are put in a totally artificial environment, isolated
from everything they would meet in their natural habitat. Many will agree that this
isolation is harmful to the most of zoo inhabitants, it can even amount to cruelty.
F. A new London Zoo Project is a ten year project to secure the future for the Zoo
and for many endangered animals. The plan has been devised by both animal and
business experts to provide world-leading accommodation for all our animals, to
more fully engage and inform people about conservation issues, to redesign certain
aspects of Zoo layout.

A. Do whales have intellect?
B. How do whales eat?
C. How do whales give birth?
D. How do whales breathe?
E. Where and why do whales
migrate?
F. What are whales?
G. What are the largest and the
most dangerous whales?
1. The word “whale” is simply the modern spelling of an Anglo-Saxon word “hwal”.
The biggest whale also happens to be the largest animal in the world. It is the blue, or
sulfur-bottom, whale, which may be more than 100 feet long and weigh 125 tons. It has
no teeth. It may be found in all waters but is most common in the Pacific Ocean. The
grampus, or killer whale (which is really a large dolphin), is the only one that eats other
warm-blooded animals. It easily catches seals. Packs of killer whales even attack large
whales.
2. Whales can stay under water for an hour or more. But they have to swim up to the
surface to replace the oxygen in their bodies as they breathe air with their lungs. They
store oxygen in their muscles and use it when they dive. As they rise to the surface,
they open the blowhole on top of their head and blow out the used air. Then they take
one or more deep breaths. Underwater, the blowhole is closed.
3. Most whales carry babies from 8 to 16 months or even longer for big whales such
as blue whales. Usually only one offspring is produced. The baby is born under water.
It immediately rises to the surface to take the first breath of air. The baby suckles its
mother’s milk. Mother whales take care of the young for weeks or even months
.
4. Whales are divided into two main groups by the different types of jaws and
feeding methods. Toothed whales have narrow lower jaws and cone-shaped pointed
teeth. The teeth number from 2 to 120 depends on the kind of whales. Toothed whales
feed mainly on fish and small sea animals. Whalebone whales have no teeth. Instead
they have up to 300 plates of horny material. These plates hang down from the jaw and
act as strainers to sift out plankton, the tiny sea animals and plants. When such whales
are not feeding, the plates are hidden within the broad lower jaw.
5. There are quite a lot of separate populations of whales. Some inhabit just the
Northern Hemisphere, others the Southern, and within each there are Pacific, Atlantic
and Indian Ocean groups. Groups of whales may travel many thousands of miles each
year following definite routes. These routes sometimes take them close to the mainland
or among the ice of polar regions. Most toothed whales travel to keep up with the
movements of the fish on which they feed. Among toothless whales, the males move
north in summer and return to the tropics in winter for the breeding season.
6. Since a whale lives in the water and has a fish-shaped body, why isn’t it considered
a fish/ The fact is that the whale is a water mammal, and is descended from ancestors
that lived on land. During thousands and thousands of years they have been living in
the water, whales have grown to resemble fish in their shape and other outside features,
but they are built and they live like land animals. A whale’s flippers, for instance, have
the bones of hind legs in their flesh. The most important difference between whales
and fish, of course, is that the baby whale is fed on its mother’s milk like other little
mammals.
