The idea of the Paralympics belongs to Professor Sir Ludwig Guttman. He was born in Germany in 1899. He was always interested in medicine and became a doctor when he was 25 years old. In 1938 Guttmann and his family left Germany because of the Nazi persecution of the Jews.

In 1943 he become the director of Stoke Mandeville Hospital. He wanted to rehabilitate paralysed patients – to help them have a normal, useful life again. He organised the first Stoke Mandeville Games for disabled persons on 29 July 1948, the same day as the start of the London1948 Summer Olympics.

By 1952 the event began to get bigger more than 130 international competitors had entered the Stoke Mandeville Games. As the annual event continued to grow, the ethos and efforts by all those involved started to impress the organizers of the Olympic Games and members of the international community.

In 1960 the Olimpics were held in Rome. Guttman arranged for wheelchair athletes to compete in a «parallel» Olympics held in Rome alongside the official Summer Olimpics.

The first Games featured 400 athletes from 23 countries competing in eight sports - archery, athletics, dartchery, snooker, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair fencing and wheelchair basketball. The name was shortened to the Paralympics.

The Paralympics motto is «Spirit in Motion». It shows the courage and determination of disabled people and the victory of spirit over the disabilities of the body.

The symbol of theParalympic Games is composed of three "agitos", coloured red, blue, and green, encircling a single point, on a white field.

The Paralympic Games become very popular. People who have become disabled for different reasons understand that their life can be interesting and useful.
