Mother’s Day in Russia
Today is the last day Sunday of November and it’s Mother’s Day in Russia. The
holiday started in 1998 to mark the role of the most important person in everyone’s
life.
The light-blue forget me-not was the emblem of the “I love you, Mom” action
that took place in Moscow today. These delicate flowers remind us not to forget
our mothers. Hundreds of volunteers at metro stations were handing out cards to
the people this morning. The cards depicted a funny little bear handing a forget-
me-not in his paw with an inscription “I Love You, Mom”.
An unusual competition was held in St Petersburg. More than 140 families came
to a sports centre in the Primorsky district to take part in baby crawler
championship for babies under 12 months. Parents could crawl next to their kids to
help them to crawl forward without touching them. The organizer of the crawler
race, head of the district family centre Natalya Rusakova told us that it was fun:
“The babies trained at home. Some liked crawling to a music-playing mobile
phone, others preferred a table computer. The third group reacted to toys. So the
parents brought all those things with them to help their children in the race. The
task was to cover a distance of 10 metres within 2 minutes. All the kids got gifts
a winner sledge or a musical toy, and the fastest racers brought home their first
sports awards.”
Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days in different countries. In the United
States, Australia, India, Canada, China, Mexico, Nicaragua, the United Arab
Emirates, Ukraine and Japan it is the second Sunday of May. In Belarus, it is

Listening comprehension
Mary: Grandad, this old photography exhibition is very interesting. Look! This
picture is from the1900s. Does that building still exist today?
Grandad: No. That was the Cathedral Hotel. Today, in its place there’s a modern
building the College of Music.
Mary: I see … Grandad, was Manchester very different when you were young?
Grandad: Yes, a lot of things have changed. But it has never stopped being an
interesting city to live in!
Mary: Really? What was different back then?
Grandad: First of all, a lot of people worked in the mines. It was really hard work
and very dangerous. And back then, Manchester wasn’t as beautiful as it is now.
Market Street, for example, was busy with people doing their shopping, but it
didn’t have as many nice buildings as it does today.
Mary: Oh, yes. Those modern glass buildings are very beautiful, but I like old
buildings like the Portico Library.
Grandad: Oh … the Library … It had so many visitors back then.
Mary: It’s still the same! A lot of people visit the Portico Library today, even
though they’re got televisions and the Internet.
Grandad: That’s true.
