The time machine

One evening a prominent scientist – the author calls him the time traveller – was talking to a group of his friends about the problem of travelling in time. He showed them a small model of a machine which he had built and which he called a Time Machine. He said that he was going to send that model into the future. After the friends had examined the model carefully, the Time Traveller pressed a button on it, and the model disappeared. The scientist said that the big Time Machine was almost ready and that in a week’s time he was going to travel into the future himself. The next Thursday, which was the day when they usually gathered in the scientist’s house, his friends came again, but they did not find the scientist at home . There was a note asking them to begin dinner without him.
  • In the middle of the dinner the door of the dinning- room opened, and the Time Traveller came in. He looked very tired. He explained to his friends that he had just returned from the remote future, and told them the following story.

The time machine

The Time Machine was ready at ten o’clock this morning. I sat down in the saddle.

I took the starting lever in one hand and the stopping lever in the other. Then I pressed the starting lever. I felt as if I were falling. The speed of the Machine became greater and greater. I could not see the sun any more; the change of day and night had turned into one continuous greyness.

I was still on the hillside, on which this house now stands. I saw trees growing and changing colour; they grew, then became old and died.

On my Machine I had dials with hands, which registered my speed of a year a minute.

The desire to stop was growing more and more, and finally I pressed the stopping lever. The stop was so sudden, that the Machine overturned, and I was thrown out of it on the grass. I looked at the dials of my Machine and saw that I had arrived in the year 802701.

Then I heard voices. Through the bushes I saw the heads and shoulders of men.

I was astonished and disappointed. Were these people fools? You see, I had always thought that the people of the remote future would be greatly in front of us in knowledge, art, everything. And here one of them asked me a question which showed that he was not cleverer than our five-year-old children – asked me , in fact, if I had come from the sun in a thunderstorm! For a moment I felt that I had built the Time Machine in vain.

By the way, these people of the remote future ate only fruit, and while I was with them, I also ate nothing else. I found later, that in this world there were no horses, cattle, sheep or dogs. But the fruits were excellent.

If –Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you If you can trust yourself when all men

doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too If you can wait and not be tired by waiting Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise
