Our School
One of the most important periods of our life is the period of studying at school.
It's actually the whole epoch for schoolchildren: they get major knowledge
about outside world, get certain skills and the experience of living in the society.
At school we learn how to behave and to cope with difficulties.
I’d like to tell a few words about our gymnasium. It is not big enough but the
building is very comfortable and spacious. Our classes begin at 8.30. There are
six lessons every day with a 20-minute lunch-break. The last lesson is over
15.55. The pupils study Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Russian, English,
History, Geography and Biology in specialized and well-equipped rooms. Most
of the classrooms are very much alike. They are all light, airy, with flowers on
the window sills, with portraits of outstanding people, schemes and tables on the
walls and with charts and maps near the blackboard.
At the lessons we often carry out different experiments and make observations.
There are computers throughout the school. We have three Information
Technology labs with up-to-date equipment all with Internet access. There are
computers in the Modern Languages rooms too. DVD-players are widely used at
our lessons.The use of them as a learning and teaching tool is spreading across
our curriculum.
After school we can work in the library which is fitted with everything
necessary. I mean it is well stocked with books from the reading list of
recommended books for pupils.
It is a state school that’s why our parents don’t have to pay any fees for our
education. It specializes in foreign languages. The pupils have a chance to learn
such languages as English, German and French. English and German can be
chosen as the first language. In the 6
th
form the pupils begin to learn a second
language.
I should mention that it’s not quite easy to enter here. Each year there are the large
number of prospective applicants who sit the entrance examinations. They are
selected at the beginning of May and have to take exams in Russian, Maths and
English.
We are put in forms of about 25, usually less, some a little more. The forms have
Form Tutors. They are highly qualified, creative and are always eager to help.
Form Tutors contact with parents if they are concerned about a pupil’s progress
and also write and tell them if they are particularly pleased with our work. There is
at least one parents’ evening at the end of each term.
Our curriculum is very broad. We have core subjects but unfortunately we have
neither options nor setting up to the 10
th
form.
There is a system of aptitude diagnosis and career counseling in our gymnasium.
The discipline is based on common sense and reasonably relaxed and friendly,
because the atmosphere in the school is built on tolerance and mutual respect. Poor
behavior, especially any form of bulling is treated very firmly. Relations between
pupils and the staff are good.
All the subjects are taught by graduate teachers.
There is the Assembly Hall in our school. It is rather large. We usually gather there
to celebrate holidays.
We shall always be indebted to our teachers for the rest of our lives.
The school life is very interesting. Most of the lessons are instructive, and I must
confess that school years are unforgettable.
