After the flight of Yuri Gagarin in 1961, Sergey Korolyov, the chief Soviet rocket
engineer had an idea. He wanted a Russian to be the first woman cosmonaut. She
should be a parachutist under 30 years of age, under 170 cm tall, and under 70 kg
in weight. More than 50 young women did the tests but only a few were good
enough. Valentina Tereshkova fitted this description and on 16
th
February 1962
together with other four women she joined the team of female cosmonauts.
Valentina trained hard. Training included weightless flights, isolation tests,
centrifuge tests, rocket theory, spacecraft engineering, 120 parachute jumps and
pilot training.
Questions:
1. Who had an idea to send the first woman cosmonaut in space?
_____________________________________________________________

began final preparations for her own flight. She was 26 at the time.
At last the day of the flight came. On 16
th
June in 1963 Tereshkova took off in the
spacecraft Vostok 6. Her call sign in this flight was Chaika. In English this means
“seagull”. Although Tereshkova felt physical discomfort for much of the flight, she
orbited the earth 48 times and spent almost three days in space. Tereshkova also
took photographs of the horizon.
