Teacher: Glad to meet you, dear girls and boys! Do you like to watch TV
games? What games do you like to watch most of all? Do you like to play games?
Oh, yes, you do. That’s good, because we are going to spend today’s lesson
playing the game “What? Where? When? To play this game we need two teams.
Let’s have a quiz to choose the players.

WHAT? WHERE? WHEN?
1). In 1621 a group of families (102 men, women and children) left England
to cross the Atlantic ocean and make a home in America. These people could not
stay in England any more because of their religion.

After a long voyage in a ship called the “Mayflower” they landed in America
and became the founders of the United States of America.

2). The first winter in America was very hard for the colonists. There was little
food and many of the colonists died. But after they had brought in the first harvest
in October 1622 , they said , “Let us have a feast ( пир, церковный праздник )to
thank God for our freedom and for the good harvest”. And they had the feast
which lasted for the whole three days. It became a tradition to hold a feast like this
every year. Since then it is a national holiday.

3). The American flag is the symbol of the United States. When the thirteen
British colonies in America became the United States of America on July 4, 1776,

had thirteen red and white stripes and thirteen stars in a circle on a blue field. There
was one star and one stripe for each state. This was the official flag until May 1,
1795. By then the country had two more states.
Now the flag does no t have a stripe for each state .It has just one for each of
the thirteen colonies. There are fifty states and fifty stars on the flag, one for each
of the fifty states. Whenever the country admits a new state, it adds
a new star to the flag on the next fourth of July.

4). The Statue of Liberty was given to the people of the United States by the
people of France on July 4, 1884. Since then it has welcomed millions of visitors
to the United States.
The Statue of Liberty is the longest statue ever made. It stands 151 feet (футов;
1 фут= 30,48 см) high and weighs 450 000 pounds ( pound-фунт=450 граммов).

6).The last Thursday in November, as you know, is a holiday in America. It is
perhaps the most important day in the American year. People go to church, and
families come together for the day. They decorate their houses with the fruits and
flowers of autumn and prepare traditional American food. It’s rather like
Christmas, but WHAT ARE PEOPLE CELEBRATIHG?

7).The American Indians have their own culture, languages and traditions.
Their songs, poems and dances are a very important part of their traditions as they
help them to keep their history and culture alive.
Native Americans believed in many gods and they believed their gods could bring
success in hunting, farming and fishing. They often had (and now they still have)
special ceremonies with dances and music before they went hunting or fishing or
when they began farming. For these ceremonies they have special clothes. Some of
them paint their faces with bright colors.

century the first colonies appeared in America.
Many of them were English colonies, for example, New England. But there were
also Spanish and German colonies there. American Negroes arrived as slaves in
1619 and began working on plantations situated in the South. They began to grow
different things.

9).In the days of the Wild West clothes were very important as they helped
people to live leading a difficult and dangerous life as the sun was very hot there
and cowboys spent much time outdoors. They had to protect their faces and eyes
from the sun. Boots were also very important. It was more comfortable to walk

through long grasses in boots. Besides there were many dangerous snakes where
cowboys worked and lived and the boots protected people from them. Boots also
made riding a horse easier. Cowboys needed special clothes.

10).In the fifteenth century a sailor lived in Britain. He loved his mother very
much. Every time he returned from a far away country, he brought his mother a
gift. Naturally, he tried to bring something unusual that he could show to his
friends.
Once (about 1650) the young man came back from India with a box of
something for his mother. She didn’t know anything about it but she liked the
smell and invited all her friends to come and taste it. Soon it became very popular
with the population and now Englishmen have it many times a day.

11).The coronation ceremony of almost all English queens and kings has taken
place there. Many famous people are buried in this place.
It is also famous for the Poet’s Corner.

12).Two English towns are very famous all over the world. They are almost
identical . Their history began at the same period. They
are associated with the higher ranks of society .
Many young people from all over the world want to study there. But these towns
have always been for gentlemen.

13).As you know most people in Britain live in their own houses more than in
flats. Most houses have a garden. Englishmen think that home is very important
and personal. That’s why people in Britain often use the famous proverb about the
Englishman’s home.

14).You know that Americans and the English speak English in both
countries, but people speak American English in the USA and British English in
Great Britain. Different words often name the same things.

II celebrated the fortieth anniversary of her being the Queen.
