T: Good morning, boys and girls! I’m glad to see you!
P:
T: How are you today? What date, day is it today?
P:
T: Ok. Oh, it’s Saturday today and you are at school. Do you like going to school on Saturdays?
P:
T: And what about the other days? Do you like school at all?
P:
T: OK, I see school is not a very pleasant thing for you but still you have to come here as it’s your duty. And
what are the reasons? Why do you go to school? Look at the screen, read the sentences and choose the most
important for you. Discuss them in pairs, please.
P: We think…
We believe …
In our opinion …
T: Thanks, you were absolutely right. School helps you to get knowledge and teaches you to be polite, honest
and clever persons. It introduces you to different people and you may enjoy communicating with each other at
school.
Can you suggest what we are going to speak about today?
P: I guess we’ll speak about schools and education.
T: Quite right you are. It’s Education, the world of learning. We’ll review some facts about the educational
system of Great Britain and compare it with Russian system, while discussing we also review vocabulary, do
listening, reading, speaking and writing. So, the main aim for you today is to sum up all you know for the
moment about education.
So, let’s revise our vocabulary first. Translate, please:
- Co-educational
- Compulsory education
- Boarding school
- Graduate teacher
- To fail an exam
- Broad curriculum
- Extra-curricular activities
- The staff
T: Well done, but it’s not the end! Work in 4 groups and do you own tasks:
1, 2 group: Give the synonyms:
1) A nursery school 5) To study a subject
2) A mixed school 6) not to pass an exam
3) To finish school 7) a summer vacation
4) To take A-level exams 8) to attend school
3,4 group: Give the opposites:
1) To be at school 5) weekdays
2) Independent schools 6) to pass an exam
3) Day schools 7) boys’ or girls’ schools
4) Classroom activities 8) to miss a class
T: Ok, you were very quick and right. But why do we need all these expressions?
P:
T: Right. As we study English, I’d like you to revise some facts about British secondary education. Look at
the words on the blackboard. Put them in the right order and make a simple scheme about the types of schools
in the UK.
P:3-5 years kindergarten/nursery school
5 years primary school
5-7 years infant school
7-11 years junior school
11-16 years secondary/comprehensive school
16-18 years the sixth form
T: Very well. It was rather simple for you. Let’s refresh our knowledge and say some words about education
in Britain using this scheme.
P:
T: Ok. Pupils study different subjects in all schools. And their attitude to different subjects is not the same.
For example, you definitely have favourite classes, don’t you? What are they?
P: I like…
I’m fond of …
I’m interested in …
T: And has it ever happened to you that at first you don’t really like the school subject or even hate it, but then
by and by you like it more and more?
P:
T: Then let’s listen to the short text and decide about John.
P: listen to the text
T: So, what are your answers?
T: Ok. I think it’s time to have a short break and do some physical activity.
P: do exercises.
T: Do you agree that one cannot succeed without studying?
P:
T: Great! Then let’s review some situations from social English and role-play mini-dialogues. At home you
had to study ex. 37 p.65 in your text-books. Did you do it? Let me see if you studied them properly. Translate,
please:
T: Ok, look at ex.38 p.66 and decide what would you say if:
-You need a copy of smth
-You apologize for missing a class
-You apologize for leaving your book at home
-You are not sure how to spell the word
T: Now, take the situations and role-play them
P: 7 dialogues
T: Well done. So, we’ve discussed some points about modern education in Britain, But we should also know
the history and about further education. Let’s read different texts and match the sentences True or false.
P: read the texts and do the task
T: So, check yourselves quickly. Were there any mistakes?
P:
T: Now, let’s give some rest to your eyes.
P:
T: OK. We’ve said a lot about British system of education. But what about our country? Look at these
statements and choose them according to the Russian system. Discuss all changes in groups.
P:
T: Very well! And now we’re coming to an end. Let’s read one more text and make a conclusion of our
lesson. Make all necessary changes with the words and put them in the right form.
P: read the text
T: Check the answers again. Tell me what you think about education? Is it necessary to get it? Is it more
difficult or easier to study nowadays? Would you like to study abroad?
P:
T: Thanks for your answers. All people like to dream. It’s very human. I’d like you to dream a little and think
of your idea of ideal school. Close your eyes and imagine, even if it is unimaginable! What are your ideas?
P: I wish…
If it only were …
T: Hope your dreams will come true one day! But now let’s come to our reality. You’ve done great work
today. Thanks a lot for your activity, brightness and emotions. Your marks are: …Your home task is to write a
short composition about your schooling (ex. 73 p.86)

Further Education System
When students reach the age of 16 and have completed their GCSE's they have a few options to choose from:
1. Find work
2. Academic Qualifications
3. Vocational Qualifications
If students opt for carrying on with their education this will take two forms, either by pursuing further
academic qualifications or by following a more vocational pathway.
Academic Qualifications
Most schools in the UK have what is called a "6th Form" for students to enter after they have taken
their GCSE's. As an alternative, there are many "6th Form Colleges" that will offer the same courses from
students at schools that do not have a 6th form. Here students typically study A-levels, further academic
qualifications required of students before they enter higher education and a degree program.
A-levels, like GCSE's, follow a two-year program and there are two components to them, full A-levels
and half AS-levels. Generally A-levels comprise of 6 modules, and an AS-level 3 modules.
Students will generally take between two to three A-levels, but depending on your academic ability
and drive you may take more. Students at independent schools may take anywhere up to 5 A-levels.
The International Baccalaureate is also now offered by more schools in the UK as an alternative to A-levels,
however this is still very small.
Vocational Qualifications
For students who are not so academically minded, they still have the option to further their education by
studying a vocational course that will provide them with a more hands on experience and education.
True or false?
1. At the age of 16 students have only one way to choose.
2. All schools in the UK have a “6
th
form”.
3. “6
th
Form College” doesn’t differ from the “6
th
form” at secondary school.
4. It takes students 3 years to prepare for their A-level exams.
5. Students have no chance to choose between A-levels.
6. There’s an alternative to A-levels in the UK.
7. Students may take a vocational course which provides experience and education.
An old system of education in Great Britain
Before comprehensive schools were introduced in 1965 by the British government all
children took an exam at the age of 11 called "eleven-plus”. Those who got the best results at
this exam (about 20 per cent) were chosen to go to the best state schools called "grammar
schools", which gave secondary education of a rather high standard. Those who failed the
11+ (about 80 per cent) went to secondary modern schools. Secondary modern schools gave
secondary education only in name and did not prepare schoolchildren for universities, as
pupils were mainly prepared for practical jobs. A lot of people in Britain thought that this
system of selection at the age of 11 was unfair on many children. So, comprehensive schools
were introduced. But in a small number of counties they still keep the old system of grammar
schools.
True or False:
1. Comprehensive schools were introduced in 1945.
2. At the age of 11 all children took an exam called “eleven-plus”.
3. After taking this exam all children go to the best state school called “grammar school”.
4. Those who failed the exam go to secondary modem schools.
5. Modern schools do not prepare pupils for universities.
6. All people in Britain liked this system of selection at the age of 11.
7. That is why comprehensive schools were introduced.

творческого мышления, расширение кругозора;
несогласие;
действовать по образцу);
процессе познания);
делятся своими впечатлениями по поводу желания или нежелания ходить в школу;
наиболее важные причины посещения школы и выводили цель работы на уроке;
внимания, умение анализировать;
системы образования в Великобритании;
ученикам отдохнуть, расслабиться, настроиться на дальнейшую работу;
