Present perfect tense
I DESCRIBE YOUR TEACHING SITUATION
II SPECIFY THE LEARNING AIM(S)
III DEVELOP A SERIES OF ACTIVITIES (TEACHING AND LEARNING MATERIALS)
TO TEACH THE GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURE.
In order to do this you should
select/adapt/design the activities that will help you to teach this grammatical structure
more effectively. Our suggestion is not to use the activities from the textbook .Put them
a) Information about the students (age, level, sex, nationality, learning ability, motivation,
interests)
There are 22 students of 12 years old. They have elementary level. Students are Russian and
Armenian, they like music, video clips and different role plays, boys like to make video clips
and photo albums using English. Sometimes they like to teach each other (especially girls),
they require to connect English and sometimes Russian (but there are 1 student who studied
German and 1 who has not very good learning ability, he can’t develop self-study skills, 1
who came form Cadet’s school and he wanted to show only his power but not in
studying). They like pair work or individual work most of all. Boys are happy when some
units (grammar or speaking or …) have football subject.
I used New millennium English by Derevyanko, Karin's ESL PartyLand Teaching Grammar
http://www.eslpartyland.com/teachers/nov/grammar.htm, http://www.teacherplanet.com/calendar/06-JUN-
08.htm, http://coe.sdsu.edu/people/jmora/Default.htm, http://www.lessonplanspage.com/, Rianna « Umbrella»-
clip and text, One Republic «Apologize»-clip and text, http://www.bigbeat.ru, Timbaland feat. Keri Hilson &
Nicole Scherzinger "Scream"»-clip and text, http://lifemusic.ru/lyrics/t/timbaland/11789.html
Specify the grammatical structure you would like to teach better.
Present perfect tense
Set up the students’ aim of learning the grammatical structure in this class.
Example: By the end of the series of activities the students will be able to use Present
Perfect to write stories about the activities of the peers that have just been .
By the end of the lessons students should ………..
By the end of the lesson students should write stories about the activities of the peers
in Present perfect tense. The product have to be the story.
down in the form of teacher’s instructions.
Example: Work in groups of two. Find more examples of the sentences in Present
Progressive in the text given above.
sequence the activities. Consider the following:
- 3 stages of teaching grammar
- Inductive or deductive ways of presenting a grammar structure
- characteristic features of good grammar activities
- appropriateness of the activities used
- possible ways of assessing the structure.
I used Inductive ways of presenting a grammar structure.

Using a time
line
Look at the blackboard. You see the time line. Try to
understand the meaning of new tense. It is placed
between PAST and NOW because it represents the
present perfect used for unspecified time: I saw it, but
I don't tell you when or where so I use the present
perfect tense.
Comparing helps students to understand the
meaning.
Using
personalizing
picture and
video for
grammar
Before the lesson I have made photos and videos. I
write the names of the students on the photos in
Photo shop.
Look at the pictures and video A and B. I explain that
picture and video A is now and picture and video B
was in the morning at first lesson. Describe what
every of students do their. Make statements pointing
out of the differences between the pictures. ( At the
first lesson(B) you read and wrote poems, and now
(A) you have come to the cabinet of English….). It is
for Present perfect tense ( class 6B). Make sentences
about themselves in groups. I elicit the sentences and
correct mistakes. Let’s point out how to form the
present perfect. Try to formulate the rules. Give
examples that explaining present perfect used when
we are talking about events that happened in the past
but we don’t know exactly when.
It allows for many personal spontaneous
responses. It makes the practice unpredictable and
interesting.
It is like real-life transaction between the learners
when they don't know each other's answers in
advance and when the interaction is based on the
learners' personal experiences, opinions, ideas and
feelings (from the photos and videos).
Using a song
texts and video
clips
Work in groups of three. Find more examples of the
sentences in Present Perfect in the music texts given
above. You can concentrate you attention only on the
texts or use your feelings reviewing the clips. Why is
the present perfect tense used here and not the past
tense?
It enables learners both to practise structures and
convey messages. It helps the students
concentrate on the activity. Students appreciate
entertainment components.
Grammar game
«Traffic light»
Individual work. I pronounce the sentences and you
have to hung up your colour card. Present simple is
red. Present perfect is yellow. Past simple is green.
It’s simultaneously good for physical relax and
for concentrate on the activity.
Word ordering
Work in groups of 7. You will have 4 envelopes with
2 Scrambled Sentences ( present perfect tense and
present simple tense, present perfect tense and past
simple tense). You have to complete the sentences in
the correct order and write down it in the envelope.
You will get the envelopes one by one. The first group
can get prizes.
It's a fast paced fun game that really gets students
thinking about grammatical form and syntax.
Students from the first the fastest group can better
concentrate on the activity and use grammar they
are studying. Students can complete
grammatically correct sentence.
Story writing
Write a story (anecdote, drama and e.t.c.) about your
peers or unknown friends using the grammar you are
studying.
Completing sentences about different personal
situations students can use structures for meaning.
IV IMPLEMENT YOUR IDEA IN THE CLASSROOM. ASK YOUR STUDENTS TO EXPRESS THEIR
OPINIONS ABOUT THE WAY THEY WERE WORKING DURING THE LESSON. DESCRIBE IN
DETAIL YOUR EXPERIENCE; INCLUDE MANY EXAMPLES AND THE STUDENTS’
OPINIONS.
I think that the way we were working was partly successful. Students were active when I used timeline, playing
the game «Traffic light», finding structures in the modern songs.
Ну, тема была увлекательной и интересной,
думаю, что я справился со всем,
тема была прикольной, интересно было работать с текстом песни
Рианны,
особенно интересно было играть в светофор и получить диск с
презентациями по грамматике за то, что мы первыми составили
правильные предложения в конвертах.
трудно было быстро писать предложения

V REFLECT ON YOUR TEACHING CRITICALLY. COVER THE FOLLOWING ISSUES:
- What approach to teaching grammar did I use?
- What was effective?
- What went wrong?
- Was it useful for my students? In what ways?
- What have I learnt from the Integrated Assignment?
- If I have an opportunity to teach the same grammar structure to another group of
students, what will I change?
I used eclectic approach.
The game “traffic light”, using modern song and real photos for presentation were effective.
Not everybody from my 22 students (they sit by 3) wanted to discuss new grammar structure,
sometimes I lost control but changing colour (The game “traffic light”) helped me or I asked
stronger students helped who could not understand therefore he or she was distracted.
It was useful for my student in order to convey the meaning ( most of my students could write
story using present perfect, they talked about their time using present perfect.
I would find new presentation exercises. May be I could make the film or clip and doing it I could
explain “Present perfect tense”. I have to find more modern songs and clips with this grammar structure
and everybody would have opportunity for individual work. May be I could find DVD or CD with
individual program of grammar, use computer class for individual way for everybody.
