1. What holiday do we celebrate on the 9
th
of May?
2. What event is this holiday connected with?
3. What facts about the Great Patriotic War do you know?
4. What do you know about our town during this war?
5. How do we celebrate Victory Day?
Victory Day, the Second World War,
the Great Patriotic War, the Great Victory, against fascism, fascist Germany,
the 70
th
anniversary, the President of Russian Federation, steadfastness and
heroism.
On May 9, 2015, we are celebrating the 70
th
anniversary of the Great
Victory. Victory Day is one of the most important holidays in our country. It is
also a great holiday for all the countries which fought in the Second World
War against fascism. We should never forget those who gave their lives for our
future.
The President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin stressed the global
historical role of the victory over fascism in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-
1945 and with the aim of coordinating the work of government agencies at all
levels and public organisations to prepare and hold celebrations of the
70
th
anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
Remember!
In centuries,
In years remember!
About those,
Who has never come,
Remember!
Do not cry!
In a throat, you must restrain groans,
Bitter groans.
Be worthy of heroes!
Be eternally worthy!
(A minute of silence)
Translated by Mike Munford
Wait for me, and I'll come back!
Wait with all you've got!
Wait, when dreary yellow rains
Tell you, you should not.
Wait when snow is falling fast,
Wait when summer's hot,
Wait when yesterdays are past,
Others are forgot.
Wait, when from that far-off place,
Letters don't arrive.
Wait, when those with whom you wait
Doubt if I'm alive.
Wait for me, and I'll come back!
Wait in patience yet
When they tell you off by heart
That you should forget.
Even when my dearest ones
Say that I am lost,
Even when my friends give up,
Sit and count the cost,
Drink a glass of bitter wine
To the fallen friend -
Wait! And do not drink with them!
Wait until the end!
Wait for me and I'll come back,
Dodging every fate!
"What a bit of luck!" they'll say,
Those that would not wait.
They will never understand
How amidst the strife,
By your waiting for me, dear,
You had saved my life.
Only you and I will know
How you got me through.
Simply - you knew how to wait -
No one else but you.
War is a terrible word. How many people were lost! Millions and millions
On January 27, 2015, our country celebrated the Liberation Day of Leningrad
from fascist blockade. Exactly 71 years ago in January, 1944, the city celebrated
a victory. The victory of those who fought with the enemy to defend the
hometown, who endured all burdens of the most severe blockade, who lived and
fought despite cold and hunger, bombardments. The feat of Leningrad has one
more side spiritual. Leningrad residents showed the greatest moral force which
allowed to pass inhuman tests and to win. Heroic defense of Leningrad, an
immortal feat of Leningrad residents in blockade days became history of the
Fatherland release. For all recent and for all subsequent generations Leningrad
blockade forever remains as one of the most heroic pages in history of the Great
Patriotic War, it will always be an embodiment of indestructible strength of
mind and the will to win!
All people know the name of Tanya Savicheva. Tanya Savicheva was eleven
years old when the Great Patriotic War began. She lived happily together with
her family in Leningrad. During the siege, all her six relatives who lived in
Leningrad died of hunger and she was left alone.
The hunger during the siege was terrible. From November20, 1941, the
industrial workers got 250 grammas of heavy bread a day. The bread was baked
together with oilcake. Office workers, students, dependents and children got
only 125 grammas of bread. There was neither running water nor central
heating. To get water, people had to walk under gunfire to the River Neva, break
holes in the thick ice and carry home a little water.
There were many cases of people dying in the streets. Day after day Tanya
wrote in her diary: «Zhenya died on December 28, 1941. The grandmother died
on January 25, 1942 Leka died on March 17, 1942. Uncle Vasya died on
April 13, 1942 …Uncle Lyosha died on May 10, 1942… Mum died on May 13,
1942 … the Savichevs are dead … All are dead …Only Tanya is left…»
Tanya was wrong. Not all the Savichevs were dead. Tanya did not remember
that her elder sister Nina had been evacuated and her elder brother, Mikhail, was
with the partisans. Tanya was evacuated from Leningrad to the Shatsky District,
Gorky Region. The fight for her life lasted for many months, but the doctors
could not save her. She died on July 1, 1944.
The price of Victory was very high. Over 26 million Soviet people were
killed, about 2000 cities were destroyed. But the Soviet people won the Great
Patriotic War against a powerful enemy. The great war of liberation fought by
our people against Nazism ended with total victory. And now we live in Peace.
We live happily together with our families. We should be proud of our
grandfather`s victory. We should be grateful for all those people, who paid for
Victory with their blood and very often with their lives. It is thanks to their
heroism that we are able to live today and create the present and the future of
our country.
(Song «May there always be Sunshine!», words by L.Oshanin, music by A.
Ostrovsky, translated by Tom Botting)
Bright blue the sky,
Sun up on high-
That was the little boy’s picture.
He drew for you,
Wrote for you too,
Just to make clear what he drew-
Chorus:
May there always be sunshine,
May there always be blue skies,
May there always be Mummy,
May there always be me! (Twice)
My little friend,
Listen, my friend,
Peace is the dream of the people,
Hearts old and young
Never have done
Singing the song you have sung.
Chorus.
Soldier lad, stay!
Hear what we say-
War would make all of us losers.
Peace is our prize.
Millions of eyes
Anxiously gaze at the skies.
Chorus.
Down with all war!
We want no more.
People, stand up for your children!
Sing, everyone
Peace must be won,
Dark clouds must not hide the sun.
Chorus.
