Lesson 44
I. Theme introduction and difficulties relief
At the previous lesson we learnt about the discoverer of America. Do you remember his name? That’s
right - Christopher Columbus. You know, I’ve been thinking about him. What did he do after his great
discovery? What would you do? Can we try and guess how his life went on after 1492?
[Pupils give their guesses] Very soon we shall find out whose guess was correct. But first please look at
the new words on the blackboard and try to guess their meanings:
Appear appeared, to appear in the dark. Suddenly a ship appeared on the sea. He wasn’t at home and
he didn’t appear until 6.
Interested, to be interested in smth, to be interested in doing something. Heidi was interested in city
life. Clara was interested in reading books and going to the theatre.
Island islands, a big island, a small island. An island is smaller than a continent. Great Britain is an
island, Cuba is an island too.
Settlement settlements, an old settlement. The people who left England for America in the 1th
century built many settlements in their new country.
Round a round ball, a round table, a round tower. The Earth is round.
[Pupils guess the meaning of the new words from the context]
1) Appear sounds cool to me. Rhyme is the air. Let’s make two teams, the one which comes up with
most rhymes wins. One rhyme = one point. [Pupils offer their rhymes:
hear/near/clear/tear/fear/ear/deer/engineer/dear/year etc. If a helping hand is needed they
get a Russian translation of the rhyming English word and say it in English. Each time they give a
rhyme they pronounce it with a word appear, e.g. appear-hear, appear-near etc.].
2) Now let’s look at the word settlement it’s a noun, isn’t it? does anyone have an idea what
verb is hidden in it? Ok, let’s look at this list, it will help us:
agreement
basement
payment
appointment
employment
advertisement
government
amusement
movement
argument (argue)
Now let’s get back to our settlement. What’s the hidden verb? Right – to settle.
3) Well, if there is a useful expression among the new words then it’s to be interested in smth. Why
not to practise it this way: each of you will get a card. Your task is to agree or disagree with it.
Please start your argument with:
“I’m interested in doing it, because…”
“I’m not interested in doing it, because…”
Pupils get cards with different activities e.g.:
watching TV news
hiking
playing computer games
playing chess
4) Island first and foremost - forget about S inside the island! How would you understand the
meaning of the following statement: “No man is an island” [written on the blackboard]? Can
we think of a Russian saying with the same meaning? (e.g. «Один в поле не воин»)
5) When I hear the word round I always recollect one funny poem. Wanna hear it? Here it is:
Round is a Pancake
Round is a pancake,
Round is a plum,
Round is a doughnut,
Round is a drum.
Round is a puppy,
Curled up on a rug.
Round are the spots,
On a wee ladybug.
Look all around,
On the ground, in the air,
You will find round things everywhere!
Like it or not but you are to learn it by heart for the next lesson! You can rap it if you like.
II. Reading text
1) And now it’s high time to find out who was right about Christopher Columbus’s life after his
discovery of America. Please open your textbooks at p.93 and let’s read about “Christopher
Columbus’s voyages”. After having read the text you are to say where else he sailed and
what the “Mayflower” was [these questions are on the blackboard]. Pupil A will start
reading.
[Pupils read the text and answer the questions]. Well done!
2) Now let’s do Ex.14 on p.94 read the sentences and say true or false. As usual, if it’s false,
please correct it.
3) In Ex.15 on p.94 you are asked to divide the text into two parts and name them. We are
going to do this exercise in the following way: as at the beginning of the lesson you shall
work in two teams. Each team has to come up with titles for the two parts of the text and
explain their choice. We shall then vote for the best titles.
III. Thanks and Homework
We shall stop now. Today we learned more about the life of a great discoverer
Christopher Columbus. At home you shall read the text again. While reading, please,
underline all the past verbs you encounter, circle all the dates and write down all the
geographical names that you will find in the text. Be ready to answer the questions on
p.95 Ex.17, and p.92 Ex.10. Also, make up 5 your own “I’m interested in… because…”
sentences and learn the poem “Round is a Pancake” by heart. Thank you for your
participation. See you next time!
