Lviv – the Ensemble of the Historic Centre Lviv is an outstanding example of the fusion of architectural and artistic traditions of Europe: Italy, Poland, Hungary, Russia, Austria and Germany. On December 05, 1998, Lviv was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The territory of the Lviv Historic Centre Ensemble covers the Old Russ and Medieval part of the city, as well as the territory of the St. George’s Cathedral on the St. George’s Hill. The heart of the city is the High Castle and the area around it, which developed in the Middle Ages. Lviv is located at the crossroads of important trade routes from north to south and from west to east. There are a lot of monuments of the 12th century. On 12 June 2009 the Ukrainian magazine ‘Focus’ called Lviv "Little Paris of Ukraine" and the best Ukrainian city to live in. There are over 60 churches in the city. Lviv is a city of religious variety: Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Roman Catholic Church, Orthodox Church, Armenian Church and others. The Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre, an important cultural centre for residents and visitors. The theatre was opened in 1842, it was the third largest theatre in Central Europe. Taras Shevchenko was a Ukrainian poet, writer and artist. His literary heritage is regarded to be the foundation of modern Ukrainian literature and modern Ukrainian language.
