wonders of the world”. I know that you’ve already learnt about it, so we will revise it
again. When we think of the wonders of the world, we usually think of the seven
ancient wonders described by Philo of Byzantium and the ancient Greeks. Why were
only 7 masterpieces considered as wonders? Why not 5 or 6? Have you got any
ideas?
P-1: I think, Seven is a magic number in many of the world's religions.
Т:Right!
P-2: In Christianity, we think of seven days of creation of the world.
T: Maybe because of that.
P-3: I think they mean Seven deadly sins according to the Bible.
T: OK! Other religions used seven as a magic number so we keep the tradition.
Listing the wonders of the world began during the time of the Greeks. The first lists
were for travelers of that time. They listed man-made objects of architecture or
sculpture.
T: Let’s revise the pronunciation of some difficult words and names
the Great Pyramid of Giza,
the Hanging Gardens of Babylon,
the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus,
the Statue of Zeus at Olympia,
the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus,
the Colossus of Rhodes,
the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
T: Now, read about the ancient wonders of the world. And fill in the table.
1. It was one of the tallest man-made structures on the Earth for many centuries. It
kept a fire burning nightly that could be seen many miles out in the Mediterranean.
Its purpose was to guide sailors into the harbor at night time.
2. It occupied the whole aisle of the temple that had been built to house it. It was
about 12 meters tall and was made of gold and ivory.
3. It was the tomb of Anatolian king built by his wife in the middle of the 3rd century
.He spent huge amounts of tax money to embellish the city. His tomb was marvelous
and it was considered to be an aesthetic triumph.
4. This shrine was dedicated to one of the Greek goddesses. It was burnt down by
Herostratus in an attempt to achieve lasting fame.
5. They were the serious of landscaped terraces. The King of Babylon constructed
them to please his homesick wife who longed for the plants of her homeland. They
were said to have been destroyed by several earthquakes after the 2nd century BC.
6. It was a giant statue of the Greek God Helios. It was the same size as today’s
Statue of Liberty in New York.
7. Scientists believe that it was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh
Khufu on the Nile River near the city of Cairo. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders
of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact.

Moscow
Moscow Suburban Nights
No rustling’s heard in the garden deep,
Till the dawn everything’s so quiet,
If you only knew how dear to me,
All these Moscow Suburban Nights.
Waters flowing or not flowing,
Made of lunar silver, the river runs,
There is sound of song, or there is no sound,
In the quiet nights all are at once.
Why, o darling mine, shy and quick is your glance?
Bowing low your head, you look apart?
So hard for me not to tell at once,
Or to express everything in my heart.
And the morning yet is getting close an’ now,
And, my darling, please, be so kind,
Ever not forget all these summer nights,
Those suburban Moscow Nights.
No rustling’s heard in the garden deep,
Till the dawn everything’s so quiet,
If you only knew how dear to me,
All these Moscow suburban Nights.
T: Thank you, everybody! The lesson is over. Good buy!
