Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Mozart is widely recognized as one of the greatest geniuses in Western musical
history. He was the founder of the Viennese Classical School. Unlike any other
composer in musical history, he wrote in all the musical genres of his day and he is
considered the most universal of all composers. His works include 27 piano
concertos, 23 string quartets, 35 violin sonatas, 41 symphonies. The piano concerto
was developed and popularized by Wolfgang Mozart. His operas include The
Marriage of Figaro, Thus Do All Women, The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni. Mozart
also wrote a lot of religious music. He composed many dances and serenades.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg on January 27, 1756 in the
family of Leopold Mozart and Anna Maria Pertl. They had seven children but only
two of them survived. Wolfgang had a sister Maria Anna who was born on July 30,
1751.
Leopold Mozart was a successful composer and violinist and assistant
concertmaster at the Salzburg court. He devoted a lot of effort to his children
educations.
Wolfgang’s musical study began at the age of three. His early talent to music was
remarkable. He received intensive musical training from his father, including
instruction in both clavier and violin. Wolfgang found great pleasure in learning
music. At the age of six he played the clavier, the violin, the organ. Five short
piano pieces were composed by Mozart when he was six years old and they are
still played.
In 1762 Leopold took the children on the first of many successful concert tours
about Europe. They visited the main musical centers of Western Europe – Munich,
Augsburg, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Mainz, Frankfurt, Brussels, Paris, London,
Amsterdam, Lyon and Zurich. They arrived to Salzburg in November, 1766. In
most of these cities Wolfgang and his sister played and improvised, sometimes at
court, sometimes in public or in a church. During the trips Mozart met a great
number of musicians, who had a great influence on his musical talent.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died on December 5, 1791, while he was working on
his final composition, the Requiem. He was buried in a Vienna suburb, at the
cemetery of Saint Marx. Many important composers since Mozart’s time have
worshipped or at least been in awe of Mozart. Beethoven told one of his pupils: “I
would never be able to think of a melody as great as a certain one in the first
movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24”. Tchaikovsky wrote his
Mozartiana in praise of him. Mahler died with the name “Mozart” on his lips.
