Vienna Vegetable Orchestra
Have you ever heard about Vienna Vegetable Orchestra? Known in Europe
as “The First Vienna Vegetable Orchestra”, the orchestra is an Austrian one-of-a-
kind musical group performing on instruments made of fresh vegetables. Believe it
or not, but all their instruments are made from fresh vegetables: from fresh as well
as dried plant material such as carrot, leek, celery root, artichoke, dried pumpkin
and onion skin. All these components are used for building organic instruments
and sound generators which usually only last for one concert or one day in the
studio. In addition to the vegetables, various utensils like record players or power
drills are used to create unusual noises and to add unexpected texture to the music
carved-out carrots, cucumbers and pumpkins! The lead musician plays a horn,
which is made from a cucumber, a green pepper and carrot. Instead of guitars and
drums, the orchestra plays, radish-marimbas, carrot flutes, pumpkin basses, leek
violins, and other freshly made instruments.
The Vegetable Orchestra was founded in 1998, and consists of 11 musicians,
a sound engineer, a video artist and, of course, a cook. Based in Vienna, the
Vegetable Orchestra plays concerts all over the world: in Europe and Asia even
playing in large philharmonic orchestra halls. The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra can
play everything. They came up with the idea after studying the sounds of
vegetables being chopped. There are no musical boundaries for the Vegetable
Orchestra. The most diverse music styles fuse here - contemporary music, beat-
oriented House tracks, experimental Electronic, Free Jazz, Noise, Dub - the music
expands consistently and develops vegetable instruments and their inherent sounds
often determine the direction.
The utilization of various vegetable instruments creates a musically and
aesthetically unique sound universe. And nothing wasted: after the performance a
cook makes a big pot of soup or stew for the musicians and audience to eat.
