Тема урока: How to Understand Foreigners: Russian Soul and British Character(“Как понять
иностранцев: русская душа и британский характер”)
3) Pечевая зарядка:
Could you answer this question? What should we know about foreigners?
What are your views I wonder.
P1 We should know English language.
P2 We should know about their country.
P3 We should know about their character.
P4 We should know their customs and traditions.
T You are absolutely right.
Travelling to all corners of the world gets easier & easier. We live in a global village, but
how well do we know & understand each other? You should know a character of people of a
country where you are going to travel. As we learn English & we ourselves Russians I would like to
compare British & Russian characters. Today we’ll pay attention to the differences between British
and Russian characters.
Understanding the differences and similarities between people and their characters is the
first step to bridging them. This will help you learn more about boundless Russian soul and will
show up some priorities and values, that influence British general way of living. This will help you
understand the British better.

II. Проверка домашнего задания.
At home you were to answer the question “What generalizations do people from your country make
about the British?”
P1: British people have a slightly patronizing attitude to foreigners.
The British are considered to be not very sociable people.
P2: The British are said to be polite and well-mannered people.
P3: British people have the reputation of being shy and reserved with strangers.
T: Is it true?
P4: This is not always true. Of course, some are shy and reserved with strangers, and some are shy
and reserved with everybody.
T: Does it prove that we shouldn’t make generalizations about people?
P5: There are some generalizations that are probably true. The British don’t like answering
questions about the details of their lives. You must never ask them how much money they earn, or
how old they are.
T: Who wants to add something?
P6: As far as I know, only officials can ask questions like that; that is perhaps why the British don’t
really like officials.
P6: Englishmen tend to be rather conservative, they love familiar things.
P7: The English are practical and realistic, prudent and careful about almost everything.
T: They say «Prevention is better than cure».
Everything is orderly the lawns and the trees are neatly trimmed.

Развитие навыков чтения.
The Russians have a great proverb, attributed to their own character. It sounds like this:
Russian soul is a fathomless mystery. It does not mean that the Russians themselves cannot
understand what they want, what priorities they have etc. But for some foreigners it becomes very
difficult to understand Russian lifestyle and habits. The reason of such incomprehension is in
Russian character, which is a bit different from American or European ones.
Let’s read about it. Then be ready to choose the best title for the article.
The Russian character
The Russian spacious soul
The material wealth of Russia
The Russian landscape
Pay attention to some new words from the text: pettiness , greediness, spacious soul, tough-minded,
shrewd, material possessions, unreliable thing
“A generous nature” or “shyrokaya dusha” will be the first thing to hear from a Russian if
asked about the Russian national character. Russian people are generous people, just like their land.
Russian people value generosity. The vastness of their land implies their full-handedness. Being
fond of making handsome gestures, they enjoy surprising their friends and guests with generous
gifts and regales. Even if the hosts are having hard times, they will do their best to treat their guests

well. Naturally, the same generosity is expected from you - and it should be sincere. Pettiness and
greediness are considered real sins here. Counting expenses on friendly meetings or checking the
bill in a restaurant will seem petty.
