The procedure of the lesson
1. Org moment
Hi students! Take your seats. I hope you are full of energy today and will be active in
giving your ideas to make our lesson interesting and useful.
Now I suggest that we should see a fragment from a video clip. Your task is to state the
problem we are going to discuss today. And besides I am going to hand you out the
tables. Let us go through the sections оf the table. There are four of them.

You will be filling in the tables during the whole lesson never mind what activities you
are doing (listening, reading speaking and so on). So while watching the film try your
best to point out the main problems and put the information in your tables. At the end of
the lesson we will need them to discuss the problems of our local environment.

Today we are going to sum up our knowledge on the topic « Environmental problems».
Surely modern technologies and scientific innovations have given us boundless
opportunities to explore the world. At the same time they have done much damage to the
environment.

2) Before starting to discuss the problems first let us revise the words on the topic with
the help of the interactive program (task 2)
3) And now lets listen to a program about the environment. You will listen to it only
once to do the first task. (Приложение 1)
Task № 1 Point out the ecological problems, decide what causes them. So we go on
filling in our tables.
Task 2 Listen to the program about the environment. Find and correct five
mistakes in the text.
4). And now we are going to work with the text. I am handing you out the texts on the
ecological problems. There are a lot of them mentioned in the text. Please decide for
yourself what this or that environmental problem is caused by and what after- effects are.
Insert the information into the table. You’ll have 5 minutes to cope with this. Be ready to
discuss it.
5). We live in the Far North. The ecosystem of our region is very fragile due to the
climatic changes, which have a very bad influence on the local environment. It is
warming twice as fast as the rest of the world. Melting permafrost causes a lot of
ecological problems such as rising seas levels and others. The Green organizations are
concerned about the situation in the Arctic. It’s high time to take drastic actions to save
the Arctic to prevent the ecological catastrophe. (Приложение 2)
Dasha has prepared a presentation, in which she tried to show the most crucial ecological
issues of the Arctic. Lets listen to her and try our best to find possible solutions. Be
ready to discuss. Fill in your tables.
(after listening) Get ready with your tables. They will be very useful in our discussion
now. I hope they have already been fulfilled.
So what are the possible solutions of the bad ecological situation in the Arctic?
Possible solutions (variants of answers):

3. Politicians should think of ways to stop pollution. To make stronger laws to control
pollution
4. To invest money into research. To create new technologies

It is well known that people make all the problems themselves. But they seldom
think what will happen then. Our Earth is blue and green. Its beautiful. But its beauty is
not eternal. The human beings destroy it slowly. Everyone can live his life protecting and
saving the world. All we need is to stop polluting the environment.

(the script of the video program) There are more than six billion on the planet and by
2050 there might be more than fifteen billion. A big population means big problems for
the planet. People are living longer and healthier lives than ever before.
Water Many people in the world can’t get enough water. But in some countries we use
too much. A person in Gambia Africa uses much less water than someone in the US. In
Gambia one person uses 4’ 5 liters of water a day. But in the US it’s 6 hundred liters.
And to make the problem worse the deserts are getting bigger. The Sahara desert is one
of the hottest places in the world and is already the largest desert. But each year it gets
bigger than before so it gets more difficult to find clean water.
Animals There are more people on the Earth than ever before. This means we use more
space and for the animals it means that there is less space than before. One example is the
Amazon rainforest. It has the highest number of plant and animal species in the world.
But it is getting smaller every year. People are destroying the rainforests to make more
space for houses roads farms. In the last 10 years we have destroyed more than 150
thousand square kilometers of forests. That is the area larger than Greece. So in the future
many plants and animals species will become extinct.
Weather The weather is getting warmer. The ice in Greenland is melting faster than ever
before. And on Mount Everest there is less snow every year. Also sea levels are rising.
This means that soon some of the world important cities like New York, London,
Bangkok might all be under water.

Environmental Pollution
People have always polluted their surroundings. But until now pollution was not
such a serious problem. People lived in the country and did not have pollution.
With the development of industrial cities, the problem has become more important.
Automobiles and buses exhaust a lot of fumes into the air.
Large cities with thousands of smoky plants and factories appear all over the world
today.
Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of
dust and other harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Accidents at
nuclear power stations cause radiation that ruins all the ecosystems.
Air, water, and soil are necessary for existence of all living things. But polluted air
can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life.
On polluted soil, food cant be grown. In addition environmental pollution spoils
the natural beauty of our planet.
Vast forests are cut and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen
balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear
forever, a number of rivers and lakes dry up.
The pollution of air and the world's ocean, destruction of the ozone layer is the
result of man's careless interaction with nature, a sign of the ecological crises.
Pollution is as complicated as serious problem. Automobiles are polluting the air
but they provide transportation for the people. Factories pollute the air and the
water but they provide jobs for people and produce necessary goods. Fertilizers
and pesticides are important for growing crops but they can ruin soil.
Thus, people would have to stop using many useful things if they wanted to end
pollution immediately. Most people do not want that of course. But pollution can
be reduced gradually.
Scientists and engineers can find the ways to reduce pollution from automobiles
and factories. Governments can make the laws to reduce pollution. People can
work together to stop polluting activities.
