Teacher: As is known we don’t study musical composition of English composers at school.
Today we talk about English modern composers.
So the first of them is Andrew Lloyd Webber. He is a British composer and impresario
1
of
musical theatre. Andrew Lloyd Webber was born in London in 1948. His father was the director
of the London College of Music. His mother was a piano teacher. He started writing his own
music at a young age when he was 6. The true prodigy

.
In 1965 Lloyd Webber entered Westminster School
2
as a Queen’s Scholar and began a course
in history at Magdalen College in Oxford. His true calling pulled
3
him in another direction. He
dropped out
4
in the winter of 1965 to study at the Royal College of Music and explore his
interest in musical theater.
When Lloyd Webber was 17 he met 21-year-old law student Tim Rice and thus began the
long collaboration
5
of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In 1965 they began working on
their first musical ‘’The Likes of Us’’. Then they worked on ‘’Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat’’. The pair’s next project was ‘’Jesus Christ Superstar’’. The 1980s was
the end of the Rice-Lloyd Webber collaboration. Lloyd Webber started to work on his musical
composition alone. First up was ‘’Cats’’. ‘’Cats’’ became the longest-running musical in that
London’s history. Lloyd Webber’s next hit was ‘’The Phantom of the Opera’’.
His hard work and success has made him one of the 100 richest persons in Great Britain. His

Teatcher: Enya is an Irish singer, instrumentalist
7
, and songwriter. She was born in 1961 in the
small town of Gweedore in Ireland. The members of her family were musicians. From a young
age, Enya appeared
8
in many pantomimes onstage at local theatre and sang with her sisters and
brothers in her mother's choir at St. Mary's Catholic Church. She went to Loreto Community
School in Milford. There she studied Classical music and art and she excelled in Watercolours.
Then Enya moved away to attend college wanting to become a classical pianist. She studied
classical music at college and under private tuition. After college Enya's first commission was to
write a score

for Sir David Puttnam for his film "The Frog Prince". But her first success came
from producing music for the BBC TV show The Celts. Enya's debut album was ‘’Watermark’’.
It blended Celtic folk songs, synthesized backdrops and her other worldly vocals to create a
distinctive sound some describe as New Age. The album sold more than 8 million copies and
was followed by ‘’Shepherd Moons’’ , which enjoyed even greater success. It sold over 10
million copies world-wide and won her first Grammy.
Enya us very famous for her scores for many films e.g. "I Want Tomorrow", "Orinoco Flow",
"Storms in Africa", "Evening Falls", "Exile", "How Can I Keep from Singing?", "Caribbean
Blue", "The Celts", "Book of Days", "Anywhere Is", "On My Way Home", "Only If...", "Only
Time", "Wild Child", "Only Time (Remix)", "May It Be", "Amarantine", "It's in the Rain",
