Тranslate the sentence into Russian and find Participle I and Participle II:

He spent last Sunday lying on the sofa and reading the book written by his favourite novelist.

English Participle

Причастие (Participle) – это неличная форма глагола, сочетающая свойства: - глагола (обозначает действие, может определяться наречием и иметь прямое дополнение), - прилагательного (может отвечать на вопрос какой ? и выполнять функцию определения) - наречия (может выполнять функцию обстоятельства образа действия, выраженного сказуемым).

Participle I соответствует русскому причастию настоящего времени и деепричастию несовершенного вида: painting – рисующий, рисуя; reading – читающий, читая; selling – продающий, продавая;

Participle II  образуется путем - прибавления суффикса -ed к инфинитиву правильного глагола без частицы to, - изменения корневой гласной или всей основы неправильного глагола (V3).  Participle II соответствует русскому страдательному причастию совершенного или несовершенного вида:

painted – нарисованный;

written – прочитанный;

sold – проданный;

Translate the sentences and define the forms of the participles:

  • Laughing the girls ran out of the classroom.
  • The trees growing in front of the school were given to us as a present.
  • Feeling very tired, she went to bed early.
  • Have you noticed the broken kitchen window?
  • At 9 o’clock the finished work was lying on my boss’s desk.
  • The book read by him is called "The Christmas Story".
  • The reading boy didn't pay any attention to the teacher's words.
  • The news brought by my friend was exciting.

Complete the sentences with Participle I or Participle II:

  • The book was so (exciting/excited) that I couldn’t put it down.
  • We were (shocking/shocked) when we heard the news.
  • Books (borrowing/borrowed) from the library must be returned in two weeks.
  • I saw a woman (standing/stood) in the corner on her own.
  • The window (breaking/broken) in the storm last night has just been repaired.
  • There were some children (swimming/swum) in the river.
  • Not (knowing/known) what to do, she burst out crying.
  • Emma was sitting in an armchair (reading/read) a book.
