Opinion Essay. Dress Code.
Procedure
Organizing: (1 min)
Hello, boys and girls. I’m glad to see you. Sit down. Who is on duty today? Who is absent? What’s the
matter with …? Sorry to hear that is ill. What were you to do at home to prepare for our lesson?
Thank you.
Warming up: (1 min) addressing one of the boys) Kirill, you are looking so serious today. It’s not in
your way. Are you OK? Are you going to impress the girls by perfect English?... We hope you
manage it. Let’s give Kirill some compliments. ….. (You are so kind / clever / creative / smart etc.)
It’s very kind of you. Thank you. And now let’s get down to business.
Stage 1 Intro to topic Opinion Essay (2 min)
Teacher students interaction based on students’ knowledge of essay writing rules.
Speaking skills perfection, home task check
Well, will you look at the blackboard, please, and say what is it?
(slide 1)
Answer Key
It’s an opinion essay plan.
(slide 2)
Teacher: eliciting what students already know about opinion essay writing
OK. Today we go on discussing the essay writing strategies. At our last lesson we learnt some rules of
formal writing and found out how to organize your composition, what information to include and what
linkers to use. We also learnt what criteria are used to assess your writing. Now I’d like you to revise
material. I wonder if you could answer my questions.
1. How many paragraphs does an opinion essay consist of? (5)
2. How many paragraphs introduce your point of view? (3)
3. What is the topic sentence? (It presents the main idea of the paragraph.)
4. What paragraphs start with the topic sentence? (2,4,5)
5. How many points can you get for the essay? (14)
6. How many criteria are used to assess your writing? (5)
7. What are they? (contents, organizing, lexis, grammar, spelling and punctuation)
8. Can contractions be used in formal writing? (No)
9. What constructions are used to introduce your personal opinion?
(slide 3)
As I see, it’s time to put your knowledge into practice. You are going to write an essay (not in class,
but at home). But what statement is for discussion you will have to guess.
StageII Intro to topic Dress Code. Listening skills development. (5 min)
(training film ‘How to act in the workplace’)
3
Teacher students interaction based on the video
Students: Making assumptions based on the video
Are we going to write about dress code?
Teacher: Yes, you are. Will you answer why the young man is so proud of himself at the beginning
and so disappointed in the end?
Answer Key
He is wearing his favourite casual and thinks he looks fantastic. He expects everybody to respect him
for his great look. But when he finds out that he failed to go to Paris, he gets frustrated.
Teacher:
Right you are. But what about the girl in the evening dress? She looks smart.
Answer Key
Evening wear is not suitable for business meeting. As the presenter says, she overdid it.
Teacher:
OK. And the presenter gives you one of the points why business suit is really necessary at the
workplace. Did you catch it?
Answer Key
A business wear is necessary at work because you should be ready for unexpected business meetings
with your partners. So you have to look professional.
Teacher:
Well, and now I’d like to present you the statement you will have to discuss and then to write an
opinion essay. So, goes like this:
(slide 4)
‘In some companies employers are trying to control their employees’ personal appearance’.
First of all you have to decide how you feel about the issue. Do you think the employers have the right
to control their employees’ personal appearance and demand dress code? Answer only ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
Students: giving their opinion
Teacher: eliciting essential vocabulary
As I see, most of you are for the dress code being introduced at the workplace. So, the main idea of
your essay is ‘The dress code should be introduced’. Now try to say it in other words.
Answer Key
- is advisable
- is necessary
- is essential
- is reasonable
- should be demanded
- can be recommended
(slide 5)

Stage III Speaking skills development (reasoning) (10 min)
Pair work based on flash cards presenting some questions
Teacher: giving instructions
Now you are going to work in pairs. But just to relax and improve your self confidence in speaking
English let’s have some fun. Look at the smart board. You see some questions. Maybe you’ll find them
strange, but to each question you’ll have to say “YES” and give a good reason why.
(slide 6)
Do you hate English?
Do you think I’m really annoying?
Do you think you are the best student?
Now each of you will get a flash card with 5 questions. And you are to ask them to each other.
Remember to say ‘YES’ every time.
1. Would you like to go fishing with me tonight?
2. Would you like to have ten English lessons a day?
3. Do you want to be President of the United States?
4. Do you want to live in the country and have a cow?
5. Do you think Monday is the best day of the weak?
6. Would you like to buy an elephant?
7. Would you like to write tests every day?
8. Do you want to be a stray cat?
9. Do you want to fight with me?
10. Do you think English is really boring?
Students: Answering ‘Yes’ and reasoning
Teacher: explaining
And now my question: Do you think dress code at a workplace is advisable? Say ‘YES’.
To clear up some points: uniform and dress code are not the same things. A uniform is a specially
designed dress worn by e.g. fire fighters, policemen or members of the armed forces. A dress code is a
set of rules specifying the correct manner of dress. It can be very permissive. They do not say, ‘You
mustn’t wear this or that’. They say, ‘You should choose from these…’ Depending on the
organization, the dress code may be written in great detail, or in the case of a casual dress code, little
detail is necessary.
In workplaces where some employees interact with customers or clients and others do not, an
organization may choose to have two dress codes. A more casual dress code is normally adopted for
employees with no customer or client contact.
Group work.
Now work in groups of four. You will have to think of no fewer than three ideas why dress code is
essential at a workplace. I want you to write them down. And I’d like the students who are uncertain
about their English to be encouraged by their partners.
Students: reasoning
5
Answer Key
I strongly believe that dress code is essential as it helps to improve discipline and creates business
atmosphere. Employees concentrate on their work, not on their colleagues’ outfit.
It seems to me that dress code should be introduced in organizations dealing with customers and
clients. The customer shouldn’t be shocked by your look. It is much more pleasant to talk to a well-
dressed person.
The way I see it, dress code helps to create a team spirit. You feel that you are an important
representative of the company. It develops your self-esteem and self-respect.
I think that you should dress up for the office not to impress but to work. You should always be
ready for unexpected business deals with your partners. Only this way you can get a promotion.
Teacher group interaction based on the ideas they have developed
Teacher: eliciting ideas and checking agreement with the class
Now I’d like you to present your ideas. Give only one argument from each group.
Students: giving their ideas and agreeing or disagreeing
Stage IV Speaking skills development (defeating arguments) (6 min)
Teacher:
Well done. But should you present only your point of view when writing an opinion essay?
(We should also present the opponents’ arguments).
Yes, and as in any argument you should try to defeat your opponents. Let’s try to do it. Read some
workers explanations of their dress code violating. And try to defeat them.
(slide 7)
Defeat the following arguments:
I’m wearing this evening-dress because just after work I’m going to the restaurant with my boy-
friend.
I’ve bought the coolest jeans and I want to show them off.
An elegant business suit is very expensive. I can’t afford it.
Students: defeating the arguments
If your boy-friend really cares for you, he won’t mind waiting. This is what boy-friends always do.
You can put on these fantastic jeans to the corporate party. It’s a great chance to show them to
everybody in the company.
You can make a purchase on credit. Besides some companies finance the purchase of a business
suit.
Teacher: giving instructions
OK. Work in groups and create the ideas against dress code. No fewer than two.
Group work.
Students: reasoning
The dress code requirements are the violation of human rights. There is no law on federal level
which allows the employers to control their employees’ personal appearance.
6
Dress cord does not allow expressing personal individuality. Some people feel uncomfortable
in a formal business suit.
Elegant business wear is very expensive. Some people cannot afford it.
Teacher group interaction based on the ideas they have developed
Teacher: eliciting ideas and checking agreement with the class
Now I’d like you to present your ideas. Give only one argument from each group.
Students: giving their ideas and agreeing or disagreeing
Teacher:
Do not forget to arrange your opponents’ arguments so that you could easily defeat their last one.
Stage V Relaxation (3 min)
Pair work, based on the flash cards presenting jumbled words in the text
Teacher: giving instructions
Now it’s time to relax. I will give you these flash cards with very unusual writing. I do believe that you
will be able to read it. Give it a try. I know you’ll like it.
How quickly did you read it?
Did you understand it?
Why did you manage to understand it?
7
How would you assess your level of English as a result?
Did you enjoy the task?
Stage VI Providing some tips on how to look fashionable and professional at a
workplace (8 min)
Teacher students interaction based on the training film ‘5 Business Dress Tips’
Teacher: Introducing new vocabulary
And now we are going to watch one more video. I think it will be very interesting and helpful for your
future professional career. It gives 5 business dress tips on how to look fashionable and professional at
a work place. But before watching this training film I’d like to introduce some new vocabulary. Will
you look at the smart board, please?
(slides 9-11)
- a single-breasted jacket
- a double-breasted jacket
- pants with cuts
- a button-down collar shirt
(training film ‘5 Business Dress Tips’)
Teacher:
I wonder if you had any difficulties in understanding the main ideas.
How do you understand the following ‘Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have’?
What kinds of clothes are not advisable to wear at a workplace and why?
Students: Making assumptions based on the video
(slides 12-13)
- The management should see that you are ready for the promotion. They should be able to see what
you will look like if you are promoted. You need to show them that you are ready now.
- If you are a men 58 or under, or a woman 53 or under, you should avoid wearing double-breasted
jackets and pants with cuts. They will box you in and create a horizontal line, making you even
shorter.
- You should avoid cutting yourself with colours if you wish to appear wholly. Every time you
divide yourself with a colour you lose half an inch height by optical illusion.
- Men should not wear a button down collar shirt with a suit. It’s too casual. It’s alright with a sports
jacket but not a complete suit.
- Business casual does not give you’re the permission to wear things that are meant to be worn at a
bar or a pool party. So you should never wear jeans at a workplace.
Teacher:
Do you find these tips essential? Are you going to follow them when you are at a workplace or at
university?
Stage VII Concept checking (2 min)
8
Teacher: asking concept questions
Our lesson is coming to the end. Now let us sum up everything you’ve learnt at it.
1. Can I start paragraph 2 with the following, ‘Dress code is advisable in some companies, but in
others you are allowed to wear casual’? (No. You have to introduce your personal opinion on the
issue, not state some information.)
2. Can I start paragraph 3 with the following, ‘But sometimes it seems to me that the dress code
requirements violate my rights’. (No. Paragraph two presents your opponents opinion. Besides, you
cannot be in two minds when writing an opinion essay.)
3. Can I start paragraph 2 with the following, ‘In my opinion, the employers violate my rights trying
to control my appearance’? (Yes. It’s the topic sentence.)
4. Your opponents’ argument is, ‘This business wear does not suit me.’ Can you defeat this argument
by the following, ‘But some companies finance the purchase of the business suit. You do not have
to pay for it’? (No)
5. Your opponents’ argument is, ‘Dress code doesn’t allow me to express my individuality.’ Can you
defeat this argument by the following, ‘You go to the office to work, not to impress. At a
workplace you are a member of one team. But you can express yourself after work or at a
corporate party.’ (Yes)
6. You can write as many words as you want. (No. You have to write 200 250 words)
7. It is not necessary to develop your ideas and justify your arguments. (No. You have to write
arguments with justifications).
8. What part of the lesson did you find the most interesting / useful / difficult?
Stage VIII Summarizing (1 min)
Teacher:
Well done, students. You were really perfect today. Thank you. But it doesn’t mean that you have
nothing to do at home.
Your home task:
Write an opinion essay on the statement: In some companies employers are trying to control their
employees’ personal appearance’.
Our lesson is over. Thank you. Good-bye.
Praising students and rewarding good work is of great importance.

Teacher:
Image is a powerful tool that relies on appearance, specifically dress and grooming. Projecting executive presence
and the right impression improves both stature and reputation, with increased confidence as a byproduct.
Participants in Business Dress learn to manage and improve their image through training to develop a heightened
sense of self-awareness.
