The Plan of the Lesson
I. The theme of the lesson is “Appearance and Character”. We’ll start our
lesson with phonetics.
(The pupils read the proverbs and the quotations given on the
blackboard)
In what way do you think these words are true?
II. Look at the pictures. They’ve got different facial expressions. What
feelings do these faces express?
III. Open your textbooks at p.84 Unit 10 “What’s in a Face?”
ex. 1 read the words on the topics “Appearance”, “Personality”
ex. 2 Choose one of the faces on p.85 and describe it. Other students
are to guess which person is being described
3
IV. Individual tasks.
Expand the situations introduced by the opening sentences.
a) A. John, could you do me a favour?
B. Sure, go ahead.
A. I need to send a couple of books to a friend of mine in London. I’ve heard
you’re going there tomorrow. If you could take the books with you, he
would meet you at the airport.
B. No problem. But how can I recognize him?
A. ...
b) A. Who is that man I saw yesterday at the station among those seeing your
brother off?
B. I really don’t know whom you mean. What does he look like?
A. …
c) K. Mary, have you seen Bob’s sister?
M. No, I haven’t. Have you?
K. I’ve met her several times.
M. If she’s like her brother she must be good-looking. Bob is handsome,
isn’t he? What does she look like?
K. …
Dramatize the situations:
1. You witnessed a bank robbery. Describe the criminals to the policeman (2
criminals).
2. Your sister got married. Describe her new husband to your aunt who
couldn’t be present at the wedding.
3. You’re a member of a beauty contest jury. Choose the most beautiful girl.
Describe the portraits (the students are given pictures).
V. It’s believed that a face can tell much about a character.
Open your Practice Book at p.54 ex.3 “Show Me Your Face and I’ll Tell
You Who You Are”. Do the task.
People have for a long time held the (0) belief that the face
is in some way a reflection of (1) ___________. There is nothing

By the way, Ch. Darwin speculated that in prehistoric times before our
ancestors communicated it was, their ability to convey threats, greetings and
submission with facial expressions that helped them survive. That’s why he
believed, all humans express their emotions with basic facial expressions.

IX. Read the descriptions of the eight people in boxes 5-8.. Decide which box
above best describes them.
Michael gets on well with all his friends and
family, and they don’t really mind when he
forgets to meet or phone them when he
promised. He is especially good with
animals and is always looking after injured
cats or stray dogs. He likes doing things at
the last minute, like going off on holiday.
Jenny enjoys reading books, especially
academic textbooks. She also enjoys going
out with her friends. She doesn’t trust
strangers, however, and avoids them if she
can. Also, she is the first to admit that she
eats too many fattening foods like chocolate
and ice cream.
Laurence never seems to do any work, but
he always passes his exams! He loves going
to parties and discos, and he is always
making people laugh. If he meets someone
he doesn’t like, he might say some nasty
things to them, but nobody takes his insults
too seriously.
Jo is an artist and one day she wants to hold
an exhibition of her paintings in the Louvre
in Paris. She thinks she is much better than
other people and looks down on them.
When we went to school together, she was
always doing crazy things like parachuting
and climbing, often without taking proper
safety precautions!
Tim loves buying flowers and chocolates
for his girlfriend and for her birthday. This
year he took her to an expensive restaurant
for a lovely meal. He hates it when other
men talk to her and often refuses to do what
she tells him, even if it is for his own good.
Susan spends a lot of time alone in her
room, which is always a bit of a mess. She’s
nice person to spend time with, however,
and she is always telling me about the
dream man she will meet one day and the
lovely house she will live in when she’s
older.
Martin always has a frown on his face and
he looks like he is expecting something
terrible to happen. However, people are
always impressed by his good manners, and
he never gets into trouble at school. His
favourite subject is English and he has
written some really clever stories.
Elsa thinks she is more important than other
people and never shows any concern for
others. She also gets very angry with
anyone who doesn’t work at the same speed
as her. On the other hand, she is often
smiling and doing things in the office,
which is always neat and well-organized.
X. Let’s discuss the following topics.
Topics for discussion:
1. What makes a student popular with others?
2. What makes a student unpopular with others?
3. What do you think is more beautiful: beauty or character?
4. Name 5 likes and 5 dislikes in a person’s character.
XI. Kipling wrote a wonderful poemIf” in which he speaks about the
traits of character he appreciates. He wants his son to become a
7
Man with the capital letter. Let’s recite it and say what traits of
character the poet values.
IF
IF YOU CAN KEEP your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
IF you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
IF you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk to wise;
IF you can dream -
and not make dreams your master;
IF you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
IF you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
IF you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build'em up with wornout tools;
IF you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
IF you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve you turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
IF you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings-nor lose the common touch;
IF neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
IF all men count with you, but none too much;
IF you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

XIV. We’re different people with our own characters. Our mood
depends on different factors. We may be hot-tempered, impolite,
rude. But we mustn’t forget that we’re members of the community.
We must respect people and remember the golden rule “Treat
others as you want to be treated”. If you want to receive
kindness and respect from other people, you must treat them the
same.
A smile is worth 1000 words.
Remember that a smile opens people’s hearts like a key.
Thank you for your active work at the lesson. Your marks are ... .
