What’s the secret of successful language learning?
We asked two experienced teachers of English foe their opinion. Alastair Banton is a teacher at a private
Language school in the UK. He has also taught English in Japan.
“The most important thing is that you really have to want to learn the language without that you won’t get
very far. You also have to believe that you will do it … imagine yourself using the language confidently. There
are other things: of course, you need to work hard but at the same time you need to enjoy it and not get
frustrated (расстраиваться) when you need you feel you’re not making much progress. And you have to be
realistic learning a language takes time, and you can’t expect to know and understand everything in a few
weeks! You also should try “to develop an ear” for the language – not only to recognize (узнавать) the sounds
of the language and to understand what people are saying but also notice (замечать) the exact words and
phrases that people use … and then try to use them yourself. Some people can do this naturally but others have
to learn how to do it that’s where having a good teacher is important.”
Teresa Pels is a teacher of English in Poland. She has taught English in a secondary school for a number of
years.
‘ Motivation is the most important thing. You have to be ready to study grammar, read a lot, listen to English
songs, radio and TV, and what’s more you have to do these things systematically. It is so easy to forget what
you have just learnt … that’s why I needed a teacher to force (заставлять силой) me to study. Even the most
motivated students need that extra push (толчок) sometimes. Learning a language can be quite stressful,
especially for adults … But if you’re motivated, you learn to overcome (преодолевать) this. It all sounds like
very hard work and it is. It is also very enjoyable I praise (хвалить) my students for everything they do
well. Many of them are very successful!”

Why we want to take care of teddy bears
The first teddy had low foreheads and long limbs like real bears. But over time, they have developed
more baby-like features.
A group of scientists was curious to know whether teddies changed this way because children like baby-
faced bears or because adults too. They gathered together eight pairs of teddies, a baby-faced bear and an adult-
featured one in each pair. These teddies were shown to children aged four and eight years old.
When a group of children were asked to choose their favourite bear from each pair of bears, the older
children preferred the baby-faced teddies. But the four-year-olds chose the baby-faced and adult-featured bears
of each pair equally. When they were asked which one of all the bears they like best, the older children chose
more baby-faced bears but the four-year olds preferred ones with adult features.
The scientists also asked the children what they would like to do with their favourite bear. The four-year-
olds wanted to play with it, but the older children said they would like to sleep with the bear. The scientists
suggest that young children do not have a specific desire to look after the young and helpless until they are
older.
