Listening Comprehension Lesson
I. Theme introduction and difficulties relief
Today we are going to speak about different hobbies, so please look at the screen and answer what
unites these pictures:
1) On the screen one can see stickers with different sport activities, so kids reply “they all deal
with/refer to sport”, then they see another slide with pictures of toy soldiers in different
uniforms, so the reply is “they are all soldiers in those pictures”, then another slide with toy
retro cars, and again the reply is “they are all cars/a collection of cars” you are right we can
say that these pictures are united by a common theme, i.e. these collections are thematic.
2) And what would you say about these pictures? What is their message in one word?
On the screen one can see photos: “Maria Sharapova with a cup”, “Nobel prize ceremony”, “a
happy family”, “a child’s first step”, a child learning how to ride a bike” that’s right it’s
success, they are all good at, successful in something.
II. Listening 1
Now we are going to listen to a TV interview with Mr Davis. At first you will hear just the beginning
of the interview and your task is to remember the title of the programme.
Tape 1: “Hello everybody. It’s one o’clock and we begin our afternoon programme “Meeting with
Famous People”. Here’s Mr Frank Davis.”
So what’s the title? That’s right. Try and guess what Mr Davis is. I will give you a hint – his
occupation has something to do with kids. [Pupils give their variants: a teacher, a children’s doctor
etc.] Ok let’s check who was right.
Tape 2: “Here is Mr Frank Davis, a famous children’s writer. He will tell you some interesting facts
about his hobbies. Welcome to the programme Mr Davis”.
So, you were right Mr Davis is a children’s writer. And what is it that he is going to tell us about?
That’s right he is going to speak about his hobbies. Now, look at the screen, please. You can see
pictures with different types of hobbies and your task while listening is to cross out the hobbies that
Mr Davis did not take when he was a child. You can cross them out on your own worksheets.
[The worksheets are distributed to the pupils. They listen to the main part of the interview.]
Now let’s check what you’ve got.
III. Listening 2
Now we are going to listen to the tape once again. And your task is to fill in the following table.
[Worksheets with a table to fill in are distributed to the pupils.] As you see on the left you should
write down the time when Mr Davis picked up a particular hobby, and in the right column you should
write down the hobby itself. Just as it is done in the example.
