/ When a company needs to recruit or employ new people, it may decide to advertise the
job or position in the appointments section of a newspaper. People who are interested can
then apply for the job by sending in a letter of application or covering letter and a
curriculum vitae or CV (US sumé) containing details of their education and
experience. A company may also ask candidates to complete a standard application
form. The company’s Human Resources department will then select the most suitable

2. Teacher: Look at the interview assessment p. 20 (G.Tullis, T.Trappe New
Insights into Business). Your home task was to read this part of the report that a
personnel manager wrote after interviewing a candidate for the position of Director
of Software Development and to put the verbs in brackets into the present simple
or present continuous tense. I want one of the students to read aloud this extract.
7
/Articulate and well presented, Paul Sutherland is an excellent candidate for the post of Director
of Software Development. He wants to leave his present employer, a small computer company,
because he feels that he is not using his knowledge of software engineering to the full. He is
looking for a more challenging position where his field of specialization can be exploited in a
more stimulating environment. He realizes that our company is growing rapidly, and that he
would be expected to contribute to that growth. He is familiar with our existing range of software
and regularly reads our publications.
Although at present he is living in the south, he says that he is willing to go wherever we decide
to send him. He occasionally travels to various European countries for trade fairs and
exhibitions and enjoys meeting people of different nationalities. At the moment he is attending
a training course at the Goethe Institute in order to perfect his German. /
3. Teacher: What questions, in your opinion, was Paul Sutherland asked during the
interview by the personnel manager?
Supposed answers:
a) What do you do for your living?
b) Where did you get your education?
c) What can you tell about your working experience?
d) Why do you want to leave your present job?
e) Why do you want to work for our company?
f) Are you familiar with the software produced by our company?
g) Are you ready to leave your present place of living?
h) Do you mind travelling abroad ?
i) Can you speak any foreign languages?
4. Teacher: Act out the interview which the personnel manager had with Paul
Sutherland. You have 3 minutes to prepare your variant of the interview.
5. Students act out the interviews.
V. Итог урока. Домашнее задание.

Man
Right, so these are the final two candidates, are they?
Woman
Yes Sandra and Steve. Which one do you prefer?
Man
Well, Steve’s got more experience than Sandra. I think he’s probably
the best one. What do you think?
Woman
I don’t agree actually. He does have more experience, but that’s the
experience working as an editor, not as a reporter. Sandra’s got a
degree in journalism Steve hasn’t – and she’s worked as a reporter.
I think she is the best candidate.
Man
Yes, I suppose Steve’s degree in French isn’t very useful, is it? Okay
shall we offer the job to Sandra?
Woman
I think that’s probably the best decision, isn’t it?
Man
Yes, I think it probably is.
