I. Introduction
Good morning. I’m glad to see you. Before we get started I want to ask you some questions.
- What do people use to communicate with friends or parents?
- What do people use to take pictures?
- What can people use to listen to music and not to disturb anybody?
Name all these things with one word. Yes, they are gadgets.
II. Main part
1. Speaking
Now let’s start our talk about gadgets. We’re going to revise words you’ve learnt, learn new
words and practice them. Also we are going to read the text and listen to the advertisement.
a) Ex.1 p.48
Look at the pictures at the top of the page. … read the names of the gadgets. Look at the
task. (СЛАЙД 2)
Which of the gadgets do you use?
What for?
Use the ideas in ex.1 to tell. …, read the example, please. Work in pairs (Ask your deskmate).
A: I use a mobile phone to call my family and friends or to send SMS. I also use it to take pictures.
What about you?
B: I also use my mobile phone for that, but I also play games on it and listen to the radio …
b) Look into your handouts. Use collocations in ex.1 in your books to make sentences as in the
example. (СЛАЙД 3)

4 Andy can’t do without his mobile phone. He loves sending text messages.
5 I can’t stand without my digital camera. I love taking pictures.
2. Reading

vocabularies. (СЛАЙД 4)

It is a virtual pet. It is used to look after a pet but not real.
3) Read the first exchange in the dialogue. What is Bridget going to buy? In what kind of shop do
you think she can find a virtual pet?
Bridget is going to buy a virtual pet. She can find a virtual pet in an electronics shop.
B. Reading
Chris: Hey, Bridget! Where are you going?
Bridget: Hi, Chris. I’m on my way to buy a virtual pet.
Chris: What are you talking about? What is a virtual pet?
Bridget: Well, my mum says I can’t have a real dog so I am going to get a computerised one.
Chris: A computerised dog?
Bridget: Yes, Chris, I’m going to buy a puppy, name it, feed it, and train it. All I have to do is press
buttons on the gadget!
Chris: So when your virtual dog is hungry, you press a button that shows you are feeding it?
Bridget: Exactly! There is a button for walking it as well. It will be like having a real dog, because you
have to take care of it every day.
Chris: Oh, come off it! It won’t be like a real pet because it won’t show you any affection!
Bridget: Well... You have a point there. Still I like the idea.
