Greet the students.
Good afternoon, students.
How are you today?
On our today’s lesson we’ll continue speaking about modern inventions in
our life.
Please look at the gadgets and machines depicted on the Smart Board and
name them in English.
S 1: a dishwasher
S 2: a computer
S 3: a vacuum cleaner
S 4: a microwave oven
S 5: a TV-set …
Please think and tell what all these things have in common.
S 1: they are used at home
S 2: they make our life easier
S 3: they need electricity
Yes, you’re absolutely right. And all these things are called electric ….
(=things, goods, gargets, devices, machines, equipment) appliances (appears
on the board with the transcription). We use them at home, and of course all
these electric appliances make our life more enjoyable.
And now let us see what the word appliance” means. Please, answer my
questions.
Is it a piece of equipment? - Yes

S 1: a washing machine
S 2: a laptop
S 3: a cordless phone
And now, please, listen to me and then repeat after me

Please make some combinations of words with the key word appliance and
the adjectives you see on the board.
S 1: a brand new appliance
S 2: a modern appliance
S 3: a reliable appliance
S 4: a domestic appliance
S 5: a gas appliance
How often do we use electric appliances in our daily life?
As for my family, we can’t live without our computer. It’s more a necessity
rather than a luxury because we use it every day for our work. More than
that, I often communicate with my friends and colleagues, surf the Internet
and read the news. Sometimes I even do the shopping via the Internet.
Besides, my husband usually downloads some programmes, music, films and
plays computer games. My son never uses our computer but from time to
time he asks me to find some information he needs.

Do the actions from my story happen now, at the moment? No
Do they happen regularly? Yes
Do we use Present Simple or Present Progressive to describe repeated
actions in the present time period? - Present Simple
Yes, you’re absolutely right; we use the Present Simple tense to describe
regular and repeated actions in the present time period.
How could you show it on our timeline?
past now future
Yes, we should put crosses in the past, present and future to show repeated
actions. Well done!
And now pay attention to the highlighted verbs. What is the positive
form of Present Simple?
Yes, we need the first form of the verb and we add s/-es with the third
person singular.

Can you find any words that show how often the actions happen?
S 1: every day
S 2: usually
S 3: sometimes
S 4: never
These words are called the adverbs of frequency; they are the markers of the
Present Simple tense.
Look at the cline and revise their usage.

Well, and now let us go back to our question.
How often do you use electric appliances?
S 1: I seldom use my mp3 player.
S 2: I use my computer very often.
S 3: I can’t live without my mobile telephone, I use it all the time.
Mankind has created so many electric appliances. Shops in many countries
are filled with appliances designed and produced by different firms.
Do you have an experience of buying an electric appliance?
S 1: No, I don’t.
S 2: Yes, I do.
What did you buy?
S 2: a notebook.
What things do you think are essential/ important when you buy an
electric appliance?
S 1: the design is essential I think.
T-Cl
S 2: the price is important, too.
S 3: the brand
S 4: the functions …
And what d’you think you should know buying electric appliances
abroad?
Choose from the list (the words appear on the board)
voltage
the local power system
a plug
the operating voltage
an adapter
a voltage selector
Ss try to guess the meaning with the help of teacher’s examples and
explanations, pronounce them after the teacher and give their ideas about
buying such appliances abroad.
E. g. :
Look at the right wall. We have a switch there with a note 220 volts. This
note shows us … voltage.
Is voltage electrical force? Yes
Is it measured in volts? Yes
Let’s compare two devices: my hair dryer needs 220-240 volts and my
husband’s electric shaver - 110-220 volts. We can see that they have
different … operating voltage.
(the operating voltage is the voltage a particular appliance needs to work in a proper way.)
Translate into Russian if there’s a necessity.
My husband’s electric shaver has a switch which allows him to choose the
operating voltage. This switch is called a voltage selector.
Can you use it to change the operating voltage? - Yes

the local power system.
The USA, Japan and European countries use different voltage. 100-127 in
America and Japan, 220-240 in European countries. So, these countries
have different local power systems.
Translate into Russian if there’s a necessity.
My iron doesn’t work. There’s a problem with a small thing which is used
for connecting the iron to the main supply of electricity. I think we need to
change … the plug.
(you may show a real one or offer Ss to choose the correct picture on the board.)
My notebook has a different plug. I think I need … an adapter.
Can you use it independently, without an electric appliance? No
Does it help to switch the device on? Yes
Do you have any adapters at home?
And now please finish the sentence below
When we buy electric appliances abroad …
S 1: I think we should know the operating voltage.
S 2: We should know if it needs an adapter.
Listen to the dialogue between a Russian tourist Roman and a sales person
and answer some questions.
What is Roman buying?
What country is he doing the shopping?
- he’s buying a hairdryer for his mum.
- he’s buying it in America.
What difficulties will Roman experience using a new electric unit at
home? Read the conversation again and choose the correct answer.
1. a) the voltage of the power system in Russia is different from that of the
American one.

Match the mentioned functions with the phrases you see in ex. 1.6), p. 237.
“It’s a pleasure. My pleasure. I’m glad I was able to help.” are used
for responding to thanks.
Which phrases in the conversation of Roman and the shop assistant can
be changed by the phrases you’ve just worked with without changing
the idea?

P 1: …“Well, let me think “Well, er, you see”…
P 2: …“You’re welcome” – “I’m glad I was able to help”…

it’s a good tradition to bring souvenirs for relatives from the places we visit.
What would you buy as a souvenir for your family?
S 1: I’d buy a magnet with the image of that place.
S 2: some cards
S3: iPad
Imagine you’re in a foreign country. You should buy a souvenir for your
family.
I’ll divide you into two groups. The first group will represent sales persons,
the second customers.
Work in your groups and think about the TL you need. The dialogue
chart and the phrases on the cards that you have on your desks will help
you.
Most of the expressions Ss could offer are on the Smart Board. They just put them into two
columns (“sales person”, “customer”) and add which haven’t been mentioned.
It saves some time for freer practice.
And now I think we’re ready to go shopping for our souvenirs.
Please stand up and make two circles: Ss in the inner circle are sales persons,
Ss in the outer circle are customers. Every 2 min. you’ll change the partner
going clockwise. The more souvenirs you could buy for your family
members and friends at home the better.
Then Ss share their opinions about the practice they’ve experienced with the
whole class.
S 1 : I liked the idea of buying souvenirs like this. It was unusual.
S 2: Yes, it was cool!
S 3: I liked Alex’s idea of buying a …
S 4: Dasha said [plug] instead of [plᴧg]
Yes, I really enjoyed your conversations today and the way you spoke. It was
so natural.…
But there were some grammar and vocabulary mistakes we should try to
avoid next time.

To learn more about the use of electric appliances read the instructions of ex.
2.1) on p. 238 and match them with the units below.
Sometimes instruction notes can help people to solve a mystery. Read the
text of ex.6 on p. 60 in Reader and see what mystery the characters of “The
Invisible Man” by H.G. Wells tried to solve with the help of the three books.
