TEXT 1
It was a dark and foggy night. We drove and drove. At midnight just as we were
thought we were lost we saw a light behind some trees. As we got nearer we could
see a house. It looked abandoned. We knocked on the heavy wooden door. It opened
slowly. A tall man dressed entirely in black stood there. “Good evening”, he said in a
slow, deep voice “I’ve been expecting you”.

TEXT 2
The man lay on the ground next to white van. There was no drought. He was
dead. I quickly looked in his jacket some money, a handkerchief and a theatre
ticket with a Chicago phone number written on it. Three murders in three weeks and
the victims all killed in the same way.
TEXT 3

an only child and her father and mother, the king and the queen loved her very much.

СЛАЙД 5
Many, many years ago a town crier ran through the streets and shouted out all the
news. But now we live in the Atomic Age. Too many things happen too quickly for
us to learn them in the old fashioned way. That is why we have to read more and
more in order to find out what is happening in the world. Have you ever thought
about the kind of books people used long ago. It is only in the last 500 years that
books have been printed on paper. Before that time the only way of making books
was to write them out by hand. No one knows when writing first began, but we have
found drawings on the walls of caves which are at least 25,000 years old.
Чтение
T. Now let’s read the text about the first English printer William Caxton (слайд

СЛАЙД 6
J. Gutenberg
The invention of paper played a very important part in the development of books. In
the 11th century the art of papermaking reached Europe but no trace of printing was
found in Europe until 1423. It is known Johann Gutenberg secretly tried out ways of
printing in Strasbourg, Germany, in 1440.
The knowledge of the methods of printing spread so quickly over the Continent of
Europe that by year 1487 nearly every country had started printing books. The first
person to print books in the English language was William Caxton, in Russia
Ivan Fedorov.
(Учитель раздает печатные тексты с заданиями на проверку понимания.)
WILLIAM CAXTON
William Caxton is the first English printer. He was born in Kent in 1422. His
father was a farmer. William did not want to become a farmer like his father. So his
father sent him to London. He worked in an office which traded with different
countries. William liked to read new books which were printed in Europe.
When William Caxton was thirty, after his master’s death he started his own
business in Belgium. In 1471 he left his business and began to translate French books
into English. He became interested in printing and at last he learnt it. William wanted
to have his own press one day and he did.
In 1476 he brought his printing press to London. Printing was something new
at that time and most people thought that it was the work of the devil. Some of the
people wanted to break his press. Caxton printed his first book in 1477. It was the

СЛАЙД 8
Robert Burns is the famous poet of
Great Britain and the national poet of
Scotland. He was born in 1759 on the
25th of January. He was born in
Alloway in Ayrshire, Scotland. He was
the eldest of 7 children, growing up a
life of poverty and hard farm work.
And this is the
cottage, where Robert Burns was born.
The family was very poor. His father’s
greatest wish was to give his children the best education he could afford. He was a
clever man and had a shelf with books in his poor house.
(Then on the stage, the pupils’ perform a short play about Robert’s first day of
life.)
СЛАЙД 9
In February 1784 Robert’s father died and Robert became the head of the family. The
farm was a failure, the crops wouldn’t grow. In 1784 at a dancing party R. Burns met
the “beauty of the village” — Jean Armour, the daughter of a rich master mason.
It was a “love at first sight”. They wanted to marry, but Jean’s father disapproved.
Burn was a poor farmer and not good enough for his daughter.
Robert decided to immigrate to Jamaica. The words of the following poem reflect his
thoughts and feelings.
In order to make some money for the voyage he decided to print some of his poems.
When his poems were published, Burns became famous overnight and editions
appeared all over the world. In 1788 Burns and Jean Amour married and went to live
at Ellis land Farm.
P1
From there, Eliza, I must go And from my native shore.
The cruel fates between us throw A boundless ocean’s roar.
But boundless ocean, roaring wide,
Between my love and me,
8
They never, never can divide My heart and soul from thee
Farewell, farewell, Eliza, dear,
The maid that I adore!
A boding voice is in my ear,
We part to meet no more!
But the latest throb that leaves my heart,
While Death stand victor by,
That throb, Eliza, is my part,
And thine that latest sigh.
P2

SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY
LIKE THE NIGHT
(lord Byron)
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
9
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace

СЛАЙД11
William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare is the greatest and most
famous of English writers and
probably the
greatest playwright who has ever lived. He was
born on the 23d of
April, 1564 in Stratford-on-Av
on. It is a house where he was born. His father John
Shakespeare, was a glover. He was a respected figure in Stratford. At the age of six
William
was sent to school. His father fell into debts and William had to leave school
at the age of 13. At the age of 18 he married Anne
Hathaway. When he was 21, he
went to London. He made friends with many actors. Soon he began to write plays.
Sometimes he worked as an actor.
СЛАЙД 12
But the actors didn’t have their own theatre, that is why they built a theatre and
called it “The Globe”. There was a sign on its main door: “All the world is a stage”.
Shakespeare’s Globe was rather different from modern theatres. The plays were
performed in the open air. There was no scenery, very few props and the only lighting
was the daylight that came from the open roof above. Women in those days weren’t
allowed to act in public and all the parts (even Juliet) were played by men. Much of
the audience stood to watch the performance. In 1613 the Globe burnt down.
10
Theatre "The Globe"
In 1949 an American actor Sam Wanamaker decided to rebuild the Globe. It took
many years to raise money, get permission and find out exactly what the place looked
out like in the old days. On June 12 1997, Her Majesty the Queen opened the
International Shakespeare Globe Center. Unfortunately, Sam Wanamaker died in
1993 and wasn’t in the audience to see his dream finally come true. This new theatre
is as close to the original as it is possible to be.
СЛАЙД 13
In 1612 Shakespeare left London. He died on April 23 1616, and he was buried in
Stratford. A monument was erected to the memory of the great playwright in the
Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey. And this is the Shakespeare Memorial in
Stratford-upon-Avon.
T. William Shakespeare was a great poet. He wrote 154 sonnets.
SONNET 30
My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips’ red ;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress
reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
11
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground: And yet, by heaven, I think my
love as rare As any she belied with false compare.!
T. Shakespeare wrote 37 plays. Among them are “Hamlet”, “King Lear”. And
now listen to this beautiful melody.
(Звучит музыка из «Ромео и Джульетты».)
P1. This wonderful story is about two lovers, Romeo and Juliet. Unfortunately,
they died, but they didn’t stop loving each other. They stayed young forever!
РЕФЛЕКСИЯ
T. Our lesson is over. And now I want you to show your attitude to our lesson. Do
