Q: What is the date today? What is the weather like?
You see, today is a special day. We have lots of guests at school. They are true
specialists in the subject they teach.
By the way, do you like to receive guests? How do you prepare for their visit?
Ideas:
- to create calm and pleasant space to have a chat with your guests;
- to tidy the flat;
- prepare something to entertain the guests and give them a treat.
T : I think, we have made all necessary arrangements to create welcome
atmosphere, haven't we?
Ok, we hope all of us have a good spirit . Let's start it.
II Постановка целей.
Today, the epigraph ɛpɪɡrɑːf] of the lesson is " Don't judge the book by its
movie". Слайд 1.
So, what things do you anticipate ( ожидать, предвидеть) we are going to
talk about? In which context [ˈkɒntɛkst]?
( P: Books and movies.
We are going to compare and contrast them, to say about their peculiarities and
the way they influence us)
T: Well, all the things you have enumerated are worth discussing.
Today, the theme of the lesson is Movies Vs Books. Слайд 2.
I have to admit that the issue of books and movies has always given a rise to a
heated discussion. So, it may be a possible topic for writing your exam essay.
Now say, what things it is necessary to know for writing a perfect essay
P: develop ideas, proper vocabulary, good grammar skills and the knowledge of
the essay structure…
Ex.1
T: Of course, it's impossible to write something without the knowledge of
thematic vocabulary and grammar. So, the first thing we have to figure out is
proper vocabulary.
Say what things we usually talk about when discuss books and movies.
Compare and contrast necessary vocabulary.
Model:
1. On the one hand,
2. On the other hand,
We discuss/ talk/ compare/ analyze / speculate about…
We fancy ( воображать, представлять себе)….
We admire/ are fascinated by/with …
We feel involved in …/ get excited about …
We anticipate ( предвкушать)/ expect
We look forward to ….
T: OK, it's nice that you see the differences and how to use thematic
vocabulary when we say about books and movies.
Ex. 2
T: You know about the existing different opinions about books and movies.
So, I expect you are ready to comment on the following statements and
express your own point of view.
1. Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to
everything.
2. Reading books makes you better.
3. Good films make your life better.
4. There are many things films can’t do as well as books can. On the other hand, films can do
many things books can’t do at all.
5. With reading you have a great chance to develop your creativity and imagination!
The film is just an interpretation of producer's imagination.
6. Films make us forget about spiritual values.
7. Books can convert the words to life.
8. When a book is turned into a movie it is destroyed.
9. Film as dream, film as music. No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes
directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls.
Ingmar Bergman
Ex. 3
I suppose everyone knows film adaptations and interpretations based on
books world-famous classic. You can see their covers here. They are ….
[ˈʃɑːlət' brɒnti]
Now I want to suggest we should watch the episodes of the films and match
them with their origin.
- What can you say about that episode?
- Ok, have you recognized the film?
- What can you say about this one?
- How do you like it?
- Have you guessed its name?
- And what about this touching episode, where is it from?
Just good for you. It's nice that you know outstanding works of literature.
Ex. 4
Now it's high time for checking your homework. Firstly, I want to bring our
guests in the background. You know, nowadays we have an opportunity to see
various film adaptations based on popular books.
The present students have been reading Conan Doyle's book
"A study in Scarlet" and seeing the series " Sherlock" produced by the BBC.
During several lessons we compared and discussed the similarities and
differences between the book and the movie. So, the assignment was to get
ready a talk show " CLASSIC SHOULD BE CLASSIC".
Ok, take 2-3 minutes, make all necessary arrangements to start the show.
Ex. 5
The lesson is coming to an end. You home task is writing an essay
Film adaptations destroy good books.
What is your opinion?
Can you judge a book by its movie?
T: Are you ready for writing the essay now? What have you learnt from
the lesson? ( вставить в слайд)
- Do you feel confident of thematic vocabulary?
- Can you develop different ideas?
- Did you consolidate your knowledge of the problem?
- Let's repeat the essay structure.
Ex. 6
OK. It's time for your self-assessment?
How do you assess your contribution to the development of the lesson?
T: I appreciate your ideas and the way you express your points of you. It was
nice listening to you. Thank you for the lesson and have a nice day.
